Sick of VAG churning out tiny increases in power to slightly out do the last car. Anyone for a Skoda Octavia 220...i mean 230. Oh now they just released a 240!!!.

Seat Leon 280,290.....300!!!!!

Golf 220. Yawn...230?? Yep

Mark my words the Polo GTI 210 WILL be coming to a showroom near you.... after you just bought the 200. And with that engine they will just go on and on an on.

Same here. My wife had a 105 PS TSi 6 speed manual. It was quite sprightly and I used to enjoy chucking it about. I think nigh-on double the power in this GTi would be adequate.
One of young lads on my street has the 16' Plate R-Line one in White. Which he drives flat out lol, It's quite a smart looking Warm Hatch and from what I've seen of, it's genuinely pretty nippy. Mk1 Golf GTi power which was deemed Hot back then.

They Remap to 140-ish BHP's too!

this, it's just too calculated and they've even upped the engine size to 2.0
the reason I mentioned it being under powered was in relation to this (I fully expected a performance pack)
wouldn't be surprised if a remap could see ~ 270bhp

So, what you're saying is, you're sick of VW sticking to a very efficient and reliable engine for many of their VAG range? You're also annoyed at them for giving it slight power tweaks that make it faster but also more frugal?

Manufacturers these days eh?

I do agree. I think it's quite embarrassing and looks unprofessional, in the sense there's so many XXX cars that are the same, but will probably hammer the residuals of the lower XXX models. And I say this as the driver of one of these stupid numbered cars.

Why did they fit a 2.0 litre boat anchor in a Polo, in this day and age?
Boat anchor ? based on capacity ?

As opposed to what, a 1.6 ? I can understand compared to say a 3 cyl there may be a difference in weight but a 1.6 vs a 2 litre isn't that big of a difference, negligible as one is usually a bored/stroked version of the other in a lot of cases, you still need all the ancillaries whatever capacity and number of cylinders.

The main difference is in design and materials, for example a Ford Pinto 1.6 is way heavier, it weighs pretty much the same as a Rover V8 with more than double the capacity.

I think a lot is about perception, which can be different from reality, like in Readers Rides a chap has put a Chevrolet LS engine in a 911, and gut reaction is that's a bit wrong and it will arse the handling etc, but its actually a bit lighter than the original flat six and offers more power and torque, but gut feel is its like mixing oil and water, not driven the result but I am guessing it is pretty good based on that thread.

VW do seem to know what they are doing, in the main, glossing over certain issues...

VW need 2 litres to put out 200hp reliably?

embarrassing if you ask me, but good news for prospective tune-happy owners
I reckon this could be more about cutting down number of engines in the line up across the board? 1.0TSI 3 pot for the shopping trolley stuff, 1.4 TSI with cylinder deactivation for the family car and then 2.0 TSI for everything else and thats it. No need for a 1.8 or a 1.6 or a 1.2

Make 3 engines. Give them different calibrations for different applications. Bung them in everything.

I think it is a shame that the pecking order prevents any relevance with current WRC rally cars of which this class provides the basis for.

It seems we can't have a Polo outperforming a Golf GTI, A Fiesta outperforming a Focus and so on. Even the Hyundai performance version will be in a class above. Of course it makes sense because they can make more money selling the bigger cars and it would get awkward with pricing - "how much for a Polo are they mad?" kind of thing.

However had they made a stonking Polo R a couple of years ago with 300bhp, 4WD and wide body kit would have been like the good old days of homologation and Chevette HS, Escort RS1800s, Audi Quattros and so on. Probably just me though...

I have one of the current ones on a dirt cheap lease I took out last year. It's far from perfect, but for 163 quid a month it's superb for station/airport/weekend run about duties. If this one is better I will probably take one if I can get a silly lease again. The Polo belies its size, it is fine on long motorway runs and though far too stiff it is so well sound insulated and it does make you drive like a loon when the road permits, which for me is the mark of a hot(is) hatch. Thing is....everyone says "nice Golf" as they are pretty much Mk5 Golf size to the eyes (I have compared the actual size so please....no fact checking i'm on a run here).

I can't remember the last time I read a post containing that and thought "that poster has a good, well reasoned point."

No performance pack ? Seems underpowered
no doubt the increased width of the track has allowed VW to increase the power, as a current Polo GTI owner I would say that without a significant increase in rubber it won't be able to keep traction in anything other than ideal summer conditions.

I doubt that the increase in engine size is due to reliability problems with getting a 1.8L to 200hp, I will need to see some real-world MPG however it could have been done for urban MPG as it is one place where the current car is weak.

I think you're completely wrong, vw fans have correctly identified that the new Polo is about the same as the mk5 golf in terms of size/power and are happy with that. After all the mk5 golf reset the benchmark for golfs..

If you consider that in year 2000 a Polo Gti had a 1.6na with 125hp and was roughly the size and power of a mk2 golf gti 8v what Vw have done now with the new polo is almost exactly what I'd expect.

Does it get the E-diff?

2018 Polo GTI vs 2018 Fiesta ST will be an interesting duel.

Then again it might be the same old story. The Ford is a better steer, and the VW has posher plastics. biggrin

No doubt the ST will be the better hot hatch, but the GTI the better all rounder or some wording like that.

I quite like the look of it. If they can keep the price below £20K then you'd be getting (in theory) 9/10ths of a Golf GTI for 3/4s of the the price.

Or far more likely he simply got pissed off by the constant ridicule for being enthusiastic about his new car and is out driving!!

I think it's great that VW would rather install a relatively low tune version of a larger engine which can then be given further enhancements than for example a 1.5 3 cylinder turbo and supplying them in a higher state of tune. Given the wide use of the TFSI and various combinations of turbos available those who want a 300+hp Polo will build them!!
