I have heard that some insurers are very particular regarding modifications.

Not so long ago there was a thread on here about someone whose car was deemed to be "modified" due to have a sticker on it.

I've just googled that and it seems to be true!

Perhaps the OP is correct in saying that it is "modified" for insurance purposes though I think some insurance companies are perhaps being a bit silly about this.

Hi,

I bought a car from a dealer on Monday, a 2006 350z, and I had the car checked out by a mechanic today for ease of mind.

My mechanic has checked it over, and it turns out that the exhaust is a generic eBay exhaust from China, it is definitely not OEM. Obviously I cannot have known this when buying, without access to the car on a ramp.

Also, the alloys were in a non standard colour, I knew this when I bought it, but the dealer made no mention that they were non standard.

I have insured the car with direct line, who do not allow modifications, so for the past week I've not been insured properly because of the dealer failing to notify me of the modifications.

Because of the dealer failing to describe the car properly, I do not trust him and I have lost confidence in the car. As I understand, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 states that the car has to be as described. He did not describe the car to me accurately, so am I within my rights to reject it?
Directline only care about mods that increase power. I bought a car that had different coloured wheels. I also wanted to have the calipers changed to a different colour. I contacted them and they said unless it increases power there is no need to notify them.

I think the comment about ebay creating this modern sense of entitlement and everything being someone else's problem is very apt.

How is a standard Joe Bloggs meant to know what OEM wheel colours are? It's the dealers responsibility to tell me this, otherwise anytime anyone buys a car, they'd have to round to each body panel and ask if it's standard or not.
Err Google? Just Google image of 350Z?

If you want to get the A+ answer google this

nissan+350z+2006+uk+official+brochure

Took me one minute whilst doing something else. Unbelievable that you think dealer has to declare mods. Especially a 10 year old plus car from Japan. I'm impressed it's only exhaust and wheel colour that's modified. Yes everyone should go round and check which panels look original, which look repaired or non oem. It's called diligence.

Let's face it the wheels are now black or dark grey?

This thread is hilarious. Where is the dealer can someone PM him!?

I read the opening post and thought 'not this again'. I wondered what happened to the other thread.

Either a bored troll or, if not, Brexit is the least of my worrries.

OP, Dear Boy

You stand as much chance of winning your argument by arguing that the screenwash is not 'as factory fitted' or the petrol isn't 'as originally supplied. I doubt that the tyres have the same air as originally supplied.

If you're genuine, I would suggest either speaking with your insurance company, paying for a solicitor or buying a pedal cycle. If you do the latter, - top tip - make sure it has 2 pedals, 2 wheels, a saddle and handlebars.

Next time you buy a car, I would suggest that you do your research, checks etc (or due diligence) beforehand. Not afterwards. teacher

Probably not easy to drag race a Focus ST until you have actually bought the car.

And lose, sorry forgot that bit.

I said this in the last thread that was deleted, I find it untterly depressing that people feel they can blame someone else for their own mistakes, and they seek compensation or whatever they feel they are owed! Crazy times.
I agree on all counts.

I don't like calling people knackers but the OP appears to be a knacker.

Which Insurance Co. insured the OP on his 300bhp modified Seat?

Why doesn't the OP insure the 350Z that has a pattern exhaust and OEM wheels painted in a different colour with the same Insurance Co. that insured him for his 300bhp Seat?

How would he set about doing that?, he saw and noted the car wheels were a non standard colour, but the dealer didn't point it out to him, if he sees that the cycle has got all the necessary cycle bits - he'll still have to be told by the seller that it has.

Graphics would be changing the appearance of the car. Fitting a replacement exhaust is normal maintenance and I don't know of any insurance company that would care as long as it's not a performance item. Tyres, brakes, exhaust, clutch, filters etc we all replaced as a car gets older and like for like replacement is perfectly normal and expected.

OP - have you tried driving the car down some challenging roads to see if you like the handling?
A drag race against your mate is not the single defining feature of a car.
Just don't race him. There will always be someone faster than you no matter what car you buy.
Even Lewis Hamilton doesn't win every race.

If you don't get on with the Z then fair enough.
But at least give it a chance.
If it's any consolation your car is faster than mine.

but my missus would annihilate you in hers, and come September when I get my new car, so would I

Anyone else reckon they can beat op in a drag race ?

I feel your pain................no I really do. I'm in a similar pickle, a bracket failed on my pickups exhaust so I welded it back up, but due to the shonky nature of my welds any insurance inspector who would see it would know it's not a OE weld and I fear due to this "modification" I could be on a sticky wicket and the wheels jeeze! ok I'm a lazy turd and cleaning the steel wheels has taken a bit of a back seat of the years and they are far removed from the original colour, some might say the 4 wheel drive crowd might be interested in stealing them because of the patina look, another real concern.

OP your a bit of a .................................... (please insert appropriate profanity)

I'm sick of people like you not declaring your mods, a non oem weld is obviously a modification, you're the reason our insurance premiums keep rising! frown
