There's nothing 'dreaded' about a 4.2TDi A8. My D3 just crept in to the 'cheap' tax band, result biggrin
Compared to a V10 petrol engine, pretty much any diesel is 'dreaded', however nice the 4.2tdi is.
Drive one, you might change your mind. Some diesels are dreaded, that particular lump isn't biggrin

Had mine for a good couple of years and loved it. Anything over 12 months is a long time for me...

Had it not been for my local Audi dealer I'd probably have kept it longer.

Hope you enjoy it for many years to come. smile

Lovely thing but please, cars are like Caitlyn Jenner: an 'it', not a 'her'.

(yes, yes I know, please don't)

Thanks for all the kind comments, I'm 19 months in and still love it, I've toyed with selling a while back and didn't find anything else that measured up or appealed, I can see this being a long term keeper as other V10s become scarcer and engines downsize, might even be rare one day!

For anyone considering one, these are my comprehensive running costs so far:

And for those asking about the sound:

Not to derail this thread but I didn't say there was anything particularly wrong or 'dreaded' about the 4.2tdi lump, just that comparing it to a lovely V10 petrol engine is a bit silly, I did say 'however nice the 4.2tdi is' - Have some perspective though please.

You bloody did, you specifically said 'the dreaded diesel' tongue out

Both are nice, just different. One thing about the 8 series, they definitely teach you how to park biggrin

Expensive cars to run and I wonder if 'real world' the dreaded diesel would be a better bet financially?
I'm not sure you purchase a V10 Audi attempting to gain cheaper running costs than a diesel - Comparing apples go oranges.

I agree, in as much as the 4.2 tdi is probably all most people need, and more.
But theres something of the night about the S8, evil in a good way, although I'm one of those idiots that would try to con others by sticking a 3.0 badge on the rear. Which of course wouldn't work as anyone with ears would not be fooled for more than a coupl of seconds.
Great car OP, there's a couple very near me, one belonging to a guy who runs the local chippie, and he always eels to have a smile on his face when I see him in it.
I'd love one, but I'm not sure I could get over my apprehension that if something goes wrong it will take th sale of a vital organ to fix.

Fantastic Car.

With you on Ronin - superb film and of course the cars.

Would love to drive an S8 but that's as far I'd go. Owning one - I couldn't stomach the costs of ownership.
I've been told the running costs on these monsters are huge.

Well done you for taking the plunge.

Relative to a 3 series or a Golf, large but not huge.

Relative to something like a Maserati or a Bentley, good.

Thirsty things though.

It's road trip HD for the iPad, it's a brilliant app. I've usually spent too much over the years on cars and not know the true cost of ownership, with this one I do.

A question for S6/S8 owners - how reliable are these things in the long run, especially the expensive bits of engine/gearbox? Ads are full of very tempting S6'es but with a car like that if anything goes wrong it'll ruin you real fast.
