RE: Audi RS5: Review

People going on about the £80k price, there are around £18k worth of (mostly useless) options. Its a £62k car with some very expensive options ticked. If you are willing to spend £2k on them alloys I don't think the price tag should be of concern!
Interestingly the light and vision pack on the S5 is £750, and has the matrix headlights, the virtual cockpit and the customisable interior LEDs. Why is matrix on its own £850 on this? RS tax?
For the same reason, when spec'g up an X5 M50D (75k) you still have to pay £1,400 for LED lights! It's a piss take. My wifes Tiguan has dynamic LEDs standard. Annoys me. Just a bit Interestingly the light and vision pack on the S5 is £750, and has the matrix headlights, the virtual cockpit and the customisable interior LEDs. Why is matrix on its own £850 on this? There should probably be an article on the best sports cars available without having to spec more than 5K worth of options.
Oddly enough I went on the configuratior to spec what I would want up and put about £3.8k on. Paint, Matrix lights, B&O, privacy glass and the sports exhaust. Its a shame they don't give the reviewers bog standard cars to review though. Seems a bit silly doing a review of a £62k car priced at £80k with lots of things that (it would seem) make the car worse rather than better (steering, suspension and wheel options) that add up to a lot of money.
I thinks its quite nice , if a bit subtle. The s4 can be subtle but not the RS! That said I do appreciate the flared arches and rear wing vent though.
Front is a bit fussy and the typical Audi/Hyundai grille doesn't please my eyes much at all, plus I think its too swept back in the headlights area and more aggressive upright headlights might have been better?
Either way I think the previous gen model was the more attractive one, making up for its well documented slight dynamic shortfalls.
Interior is lovely though.

The VAG group, Audi especially, are playing a dangerous game. I deliver cars, every other week, for BCA and affiliates mostly and I drive everything. Thousands of miles a week. The cars are just not good enough anymore. Audi are way off the pace. They look great, and the flashy dashboards are diverting but they really do drive poorly compared to the competition. It's all perceived quality.

I can understand them charging for carbon brakes, sports exhaust, even the fancy seats but in some areas Audi really do take the piss!
I saw that and thought Wolfrace wheels.
Not a fan of those to be honest, O.Z is what Audi wheel stylists should be trying to copy. The uniform looks of the cars for the last few years seems to be counterpointed by a wheel designer based in the US who likes his opoids.
The gear shift as well, can it get anymore chunky? I remember Vauxhall with it's Kryten head gearknob. This thing is starting to look like zaphod beeblebrox head.
Sad !

This really nails it. I feel good when it is on the drive and I feel good pushing buttons inside whilst I go from A to B.Most people just want that though. Bit like the latest high brand value phone.
£81k... I don't want to be one of those people who compares new to used but F me that is a lot of dosh. Just think for that money you could have 3x 5 year old cars, a Boxster S, 5 year old RS5, plus a 530d for the family / dog etc. The running costs would be lower than the depreciation on that new RS5. Doesn't make sense to me
Such a shame Audi have dropped any hint of motorsport pedigree with their RS cars. RS2 and it's Porsche links, B5 RS4 and C5 RS6 with their extensive Cosworth tweaking - made these cars really special and you got the hint that they were bought by proper enthusiasts, people in the know, rather than just some sort of 'look at me' status symbol as current RS cars seem to have become. Audi seem do an 'RS' everything now, none of which is particularly inspiring or special.
