Mansory Mulsanne announced

Mansory turns its attention to the big Bentley, but why?

In recent years, Mansory has steadily built one of the most divisive names in the automotive world for itself - one piece of carbon fibre trim at a time. Its cars are seen by some as the epitome of rebellious cool, throwing two fingers up at the outdated concept of class; and by others as the definition of gauche, a symbol of everything wrong with blingy new-monied excess. It's safe to say this latest announcement is unlikely to change any of that.

That's despite the fact that, in this instance, the Bavarian tuner describes its modifications as "subtle" and, compared to some of its previous work, they are. Certainly next to the carbon-bonnetted Bentayga announced last year, this Mulsanne appears to be really rather restrained.

Look a little closer though and the telltale signs of a visit from Kourosh Mansory are all there, giving the car "a decent nudge towards enhanced sportiness." Whatever that means.

There's a carbon lip and air inlet covers at the front, carbon skirts at the sides, a new exhaust system underneath and a carbon spoiler and diffuser at the back. There are new, 22-inch wheels as well which, surprisingly enough, are not carbon, instead being forged from a "particularly light' aluminium alloy - crucial on a 2.6-tonne car.

To Mansory's credit though, the modifications are not merely skin deep. The engine has been fettled to release a further 73hp, taking the new total to 585, with a tarmac crimping 811lb ft of torque now available. Meaning that this Mulsanne is capable of 0-62 in just 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 190mph, and that's slightly brilliant.

It's also slightly pointless - and not just because it's a luxury limousine with the sporting pretensions of a telephone box - but because Bentley already offers an 811lb ft, 190mph Mulsanne in the shape of the Speed. It even comes with carbon bits.

Which begs the question; if you can buy the same thing from Bentley, why wouldn't you? Unless you want that badly to go against the grain, in which case, why would you buy a Mulsanne at all?

There's no word yet on pricing or availability, but should you be interested in perusing some of Mansory's other offerings there are quite a few in the classifieds... how about that Aventador?

I was expecting Klass and not Class.

Surprisingly restrained for Mansory.

I would have thought that reducing unsprung weight provide benefits regardless of the overall vehicle weight?

A fair point but when the car is already so heavy, the change in the damping ratio as a result isn't going to be that significant, especially when you consider how much the brake discs weigh.

That's actually quite a subdued "Barrying" from Mansonry the house of minging customisation for those with deep pockets and no taste.

Needs different wheels and it would be.... rather nice.

Right now... meh.

Mansory is finally going in the right direction. Maybe to please everyone they could make one restrained, elegant version of e.g S65, and a horrifically ugly bonkers version.

the question is not why they build this. Nobody cares.

Not really sure what they are adding, some massive wheels, some carbon bits, remap and an exhaust ?

Not sure how it qualifies as a Mansory Mulsanne, its still 99 percent original Bentley.

I suppose it is more difficult these days, Overfinch used to do achingly cool things to Range Rovers, there was a lot of room for improvement in terms of performance so you shoved a yank V8 in, the interior was nice but not super plush, so scope there as well but nowadays JLR do a solid job of finishing their cars and making them perform so along comes Kahn, Mansory, Onyx and the rest of them and it is slim pickings that generally seem to make the base car stand out, but for the wrong reasons, a Kahn RR Sport, to me is the car equivalent of Ali G's tracksuit.

Always think its rather rude to remove the Range Rover badging and replace it with Kahn or whatever, its like the bloke who writes the forward on a novel changing the authors name for his own, but the punters seem to love it, if a RR Sport isnt flash and in your face enough, get one of these outfits to tart it up.

They do seem to attract some utter "Throbbers" (borrowing that word, I quite like it) judging by the way they get parked/driven round here and the one I saw the other day with a silver on black reg plate, dont think it was pre 1975 being as it was a new model.

Even though Overfinch is Mansory with a historical badge, I still like them enough to warrant strangely liking this (bar the horrible bootlid, vents and OTT spoiler)

I feel unclean.

At £209,990 they can keep it though!

Hang on, I always thought that Mansory were the lead designer for the Mulsanne project, wasn't this the case?
