Another vote for Copilot, I've I've used it all over the world. Extra maps are cheap enough.

Co Pilot is sounding a good option.

Thanks for all the replies.

I do get free data in EU but I don't have a huge data allowance in the first place hence trying to avoid splurging it all on mapping.
You might be able to purcahse additional data for less than the cost of an app

I use Waze all the time alongside a regular Garmin satnav (it's slightly better for postcode location). Uses very little data and its got me to Bratislava and back a dozen times in the last two years without a hitch. Won't cost a penny more than the UK if you're on an EU wide inclusive network. The one big plus is live traffic updates throughout Europe. The flipside is, it does like a shortcut even if it only saves a minute so I always keep one eye on the Garmin.

Google maps got me to the arse end of Italy without issue, avoided lots of traffic too!

If you want 'free' go Google Maps.

If you want to pay and have the maps on the phone, pay for TomTom. It's the best nav there is with speed camera and traffic data that's reliable. The subscription covers all maps in the world, traffic and speed cameras for three years.

Good luck and enjoy the holiday.

On a recent Euro trip I used google maps until Troyes. On leaving Troyes (down through France, French Alps, Switzerland, Germany and back to Calais) neither Google maps nor Waze would pick up the Satellites, anywhere.

I used the car's on-board Sat Nav instead and it worked flawlessly.

As soon as I got back to within a couple of hours of Calais both Waze and google started working again, very odd.
