I just tell them.

It's not exactly rocket science for them to work it out anyway and I'm not sure what I'd be losing by being upfront.

People can change when they know someone has a few quid. Usually not for the better.

I just say "can't remember, I'd have to ask the bank, who own most of it".

May or may not be true, but puts most people off further financial probing I find.

Again they could work it out if they were inclined. And if they ARE the type of people who suffer from jealousy or envy then all I can say is..... GOOD biggrin

It's funny saying something that's lower than they expect, my latest car cost me £300 yet the engine under the bonnet cost me more than 10x that.

Nowadays people ask as they wonder how much per month it is and whether they can afford it, when the sub £200 per month Golf R and 135 deals were going on a couple of years back people were distraught when they found out that it costs less to own a sub 5 second performance per month than the 13+ second Citroen and Peugeots they had.

I usually just say "well you can pick up a reasonable one for £18-20K, a better one for £20-25K but this will cost you a lot more..."
Then you can bore them to death about all the work you've put into it until they slowly slink away biggrin

Ohhhh yes, I think you'll find that it's worth paying just a LITTLE bit extra for the premium floor mats which, as you know, are on average 3mm thicker than the standard BMW floormats, and naturally I went for the vermillion leather inserts as opposed to the fuschia which Im sure you'll agree contrast quite nicely with the banana-yellow nappa leather inserts....
They won't ask again... biggrin

I wish I was the kind of man to afford a car that prompts somebody to ask biggrin

Saying that someone did ask me how much my mr2 turbo was in a petrol station the other day, but it was in Southend and he was a chav so it doesn't really count. I told him honestly how much I paid. He then asked how fast it goes, and I told him it depends how hard you push the throttle. You could see his mind working in real time. It was only a joke but I felt bad for making him think so hard biggrin

So what would you/do you say?
"A fair bit, took a lot of saving".

Doesn't directly answer the question, if they want to know that, then it's easy enough to look at the manufacturer's website. And tries to be slightly modest about the amount.

What about this one.

"Everything I had at the time and more".

It would actually be the truth on at least 20 occasions!!

Someone I know owned a Ferrari 458, he was sick of people asking questions that he couldn't answer as it was just a car to show off in, he had his secretary print off the spec sheet with the options price plus all the info on the and stuck it in the dash when he parked it up, he would just say read that and walk off.

I get them to guess and then say £24k because that's what my Caterham cost.
