Surely currently the most common reply would be 'about £300 a month mate' with 80% leasing.

I just tell them and have a friendly chat unless they are being deliberately obnoxious and then I just tell them I'm rich which ends it.

The same as a X and it's gone up in value since I've owned it.

The fact a car can increase in value usually shuts them up.

I rarely get the question but I just tell them. Very easy to check it out on their phone anyway assuming you don't drive a Squire or a Tatra 603 and even then......

The more common question is How fast will it go? I usually say it can't even do 1mph by itself as its about how fast the driver can go and that it has more potential in the hands of a more talented driver than I.

The actual value is largely irrelevant, the fact you have something "different" seems to arouse interest, positive or otherwise, in many people. The fact my entire fleet is worth far less than a middle managers company Merc or the nearest yummy mummy's school run Rangey seems lost on them.

Talking to a plasterer yesterday who mentioned the frisson of excitement that went around his curl de sac when someone pulled up in a six grand Audi TT, eclipsing the forty grand Toyota Landcruisers etc in the houses adjacent.

In a similar veign, 2 neighbours have stuck up massive extensions, and no one has asked them how much they cost?

If I'm asked, I'll give them a price range, saying something like "they made these between 2002 and 2012, so ratty ones start at £4,000, and go all the way up to £35,000-ish".

They can then decide by looking at my car what they think I might have paid for it. As it's a very nice looking car for its year, I would imagine they are over-estimating the vehicle's value.

Not only have I not been rude, I've given them a bit of info on used car prices. smile

I get this question a lot... but its about my dog.

when i'm out walking him I quite regularly get people asking how much he cost. I always find it a bit rude.

I just say "enough..."
This. My response is usually along the lines that I have no idea or can't remember.

First thing people ask about the Caterham is how fast it goes. That's annoying because it's top speed is literally the least remarkable thing about the car.
The most common questions I get are how much, how fast, or a question about fuel efficiency

If asked how fast, I usually ask them if they mean the top speed, 0-60, 0-100 or how fast round a track. After a pause whilst they digest the question, they more often than not come back with top speed. I normally say don't know, don't care. That tends to stump them

If they ask how much, I do find it very rude. I'm not comfortable telling people outside close friends or petrolheads that will already have a vague idea of the cost, that I've spent the thick end of £200k on a car. If it's a middle aged + man asking, I normally deflect by saying I can only afford the car because I have no wife or kids. That usually elicits a grin, a nod and a small look of envy

But the one that makes me roll my eyes is about fuel efficiency, because the most common questions I get about that are how much does it cost to fill up or how many miles to a tank, but never the two questions together. I've always found that incredibly odd because unless you know the answers to both questions, you're not actually getting to the nub of whether it does more or less mpg than a 'regular' car (Mine has a 6.0 litre V12 so their eyes would water if they asked the right question)

This is why I never tell people how much i paid for my Veyron, it seems to flick a switch and all of a sudden they treat you differently if they know you have money.
Recently got a BMW 5 series on a private plate, but its a 55 reg and I get the same!

"Ohhhhh, how much did that cost? A BMW? You must be doing well!"

When you point out that they pay more for the brand new car they have just got out of every year in finance payments than I did for my car they soon walk off.

Obv not on the same level as a Veyron but its amazing how people change their attitude towards you based on the car or type of car you drive just based on what they think the value is.

Why not use something along the lines of that snooty toff in The Lost World: Jurassic Park;

"This suit costs more than your education"

Could be amended to "This car costs more than your manners".

Not that I'd ever mind telling people I bought a champagne car for lemonade money.

This is my answer too. I usually add "the person who bought it new lost more money on it than I paid for it".

I've never been asked "how much"?
I've been asked how fast, how many miles to the gallon, had it long, is it tricky to look after etc but never how much.
I guess people are ruder down South hehe

I've never understood this frame of mind. How is it rude? you pay the same as the next guy with the same car (if new) it's not a very personal question and it's not hard to find out how much it's worth, People can find out exactly what you paid for your house via zoopla for example, is that website rude?

I don't go round asking people what they paid for things because I have a smartphone and if I felt the need to could find out roughly what someone paid but if someone genuinely wants to know I have no issue with it.

Someone I know owned a Ferrari 458, he was sick of people asking questions that he couldn't answer as it was just a car to show off in, he had his secretary print off the spec sheet with the options price plus all the info on the and stuck it in the dash when he parked it up, he would just say read that and walk off.
That's even more cringy than people asking the question in the first place.

I try and get away with ridiculous figures to see if the questionee is remotely bothered or just wants a figure they can bh about me over. Obviously if a fellow petrolhead asks then I will happily be honest as they may be interested in owning one themselves at some point, but I remember telling someone my Aston cost about £10k and my bugeye Impreza cost me exactly £36,941. He believed me.
This.... If it's a genuine conversation fair enough but when they just care about value I throw a ridiculous figure at them.

On the rare occasions I was asked about the price of my car or bike I have always answered with a range. 'A tatty one will cost you £ xx but a mint one will fetch £ yxz'. That typically does the trick.
