I can't see a Golf R tuned to that level being that handy as a daily hack either.... to be fair.

The Haldex stuff won't like it for long. Rear diffs and gearboxes have blown running far less power than that, but they only need 1 run to convince the gullible it's a tried, tested and daily reliable package.
Gearboxes are rated by torque rather than power. The point stands though, the transmission is liable to be a weak point.

Ex-factory the motor produces 400nm.
God knows what it's doing when it's up at circa 800bhp - but if it's not revving any higher than normal then 800nm is a reasonable ballpark estimate.

Good fking luck with that...

I don't see the excitement. We know 4WD and DSG will mean it will punch above its weight.

Far more interesting if it does the quarter in 9.5 seconds.... and did 10,000 between oil changes, or still does 35mpg, or did 100 launches with 4 passengers with no issues.

Otherwise, just like any other turbo car, who cares? Congratulations, you upped the boost.

The Golf R Mk7 stock engine and gearbox will handle 550-600bhp and 450-500 lbft, when mapped properly. A couple dozen of them running happily in the wild across the UK for the past 2 years.

Taking it a little further to 750-800bhp and 500-600 lbft with some strengthened components (pistons, clutch, etc.) is not a major leap forward. These are going to last much longer than you think. Would expect to see 20-30k miles without any major problems, which is about the same kind of reliability you see with a McLaren or Ferrari at the same power level.

Excellent comparison, right there.
I bet the seats, aircon and stereo are all brilliant on the bike. And I bet it's really handy when you need to nip to Ikea...
It's actually perfect for Ikea. Wife won't go with you and you can't buy too much.

Aircon and stereo are found on your right wrist, seat is just fine.

Whatever the car is, it's a bloody good achievement in my opinion, especially from a 2.0 4 pot.

Quite.

Whilst we're in the stoopid comparison shop I once shot a SLR 7.62mm rifle and 0-60 and 1/4 mile times were mental.

Nowhere near £7k and at the time it was free on a long term loan from the Royal Marines.

Whatever. I'd sooner do 20 full bore quarter mile drag runs on a '14 then ride it round Europe and have a shed hatchback for practicality than blow 50k on a golf that will need expensive mending every five minutes.

Maybe I'm due a whoosh parrot, but jap 2ltr 4 pots have been running in the 9s for quite some time. This MR2 was running 9s without the benefit of 4WD or sophisticated clutch/gearbox trickery over 10 years ago https://youtu.be/P6fB73OAwko I'm sure there will have been Evos and Imprezas going even faster.

Threads like this are so predictable. Some original thinker always comes along and says a bike is faster rofl

Anyway, back to the OP - that is pretty incredible for a 2ltr hot hatch. Not sure how long it'll last running that sort of power but still impressive.

The most impressive thing is how a Golf with 780bhp and a sub 10 second 1/4 mile looks and sounds so boring.

Threads like this are so predictable. Some original thinker will come along with ideas that spending £50k on a pretty much undrivable in the real world mundane hatch is somehow laudable due to the wasteful impracticality of it all.
