Hi all

Looking for validation more than anything, so thought best to ask in here. Am planning on a one night stay in the Brecon Beacons in Spetember. Plan is to drive up with the dog from Southampton, arrive midday, quick walk, kip in YHA, big walk the next day then head home.

I have 3 things I need help with if anyone can assist:

1. Any good stops en-route from Southampton to Breacon Beacons where I can stop and let the dog run off some energy? Ideally around the 1.5hr mark.
2. Suggestions for a quick walk in the afternoon when there?
3. Is the horseshoe walk dog friendly? I assume there are loads of streams etc for dog water.

Many thanks.

It's been a while, but I don't remember there being streams or pools along the main ridge itself. If you are crossing the flanks of any of the hills a few hundred feet off the ridge, or you're in any of the valley floors there'll be plenty of water. So I'd guess you'd have plenty of water on the walk in and the walk out if you're off the ridges, but not much if you're up on top. But it'll probably be pissing with rain anyway.

We did the horseshoe last weekend, albeit without a dog. Shouldn't have any issues with the dog, but for drinks I would carry some with you. Some sheer drops and steep edges off the ridge in some places to be aware of.

We went from the left of the storey arms up to corn du then over the peaks to Fan y big. A very nice walk.

Good dog walk an hour and a half from Southampton? How about Clifton Down in Bristol?

We did it in March with 2 dogs, basically starting at the Storey arms, Summiting and then following the horse show walk as in this here:

https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/brecon-beacons/tr...

Dogs were off the lead most of the time, just need to be careful when nearing the summit from the Storey arms side as there are some steep drops there so dogs back on leads then. We totalled a half marathon on the day so my dog was suitably knackered but loved it.

Second summiting for him as he'd previously done it in the winter when there was snow, will post a photo of that one tonight as its one of my favs.

It is a great walk unfortunately not done it when there's be good visibility yet. Doodles has also managed Snowdon too though so hoping to do Cadair Idris soon though so he can tick off the three welsh peaks.

Quick walk in the afternoon - something in the Black mountains. Sugar loaf, Mynedd troed, Castle ridge, etc etc. How long do you want to go for.
Stop off on the way, could be in Wye valley - decent walking up the back of Tintern Abbey.

Just to update the thread, we ended up walking up from the Storey Arms, and took in Corn Du, Pen Y Fan, Cribyn and Fan Y Big before heading down the the reservoir (via a detour..) up the other side and back down to the Storey Arms. 12 miles in total. Amazing route and an amazing location. The dog loved it too. Weather wasn't brilliant so he ended up wearing his coat most of the day. It was the morning after the storm last week.

Few pictures here if you scroll down a little

and the route here

On the way there we stopped at the Westbury White Horse, which is also a lovely walk. There are also pictures on the page.

Fantastic photos and looks like you did a very similar route to what we did! How shattered was Chewie after?

Me and a mate are doing Cadair Idris (mid wales mountain) on Tuesday with Doodles and his Springer mate Mack so will hopefully have some photos of that too.

He wasn't too bad to be honest. When we got back to the car he jumped in pretty sharpish and lay down. He was snoozing all the way home (3hrs) but once home he ran around with the others for a bit. By the next morning he was raring to go on our normal hour long forest walk. It barely seemed to register, but he is a 15 month old whippet. I think he was more tired the day before as he'd not slept at all in the car after running around the Westbury White Horse.

Have fun doing Cadair Idris, please share photos.
