RE: Nissan Skyline GT-R (R33): Spotted
Discussion
I'm glad I had my time in a couple of GT-R's before they became "fashionable", brilliant car and the RB26 would easily get in my top 10 engines list. The way it pulled to it's 8000rpm+ redline and the noise it makes, especially for something with two turbo's bolted onto is unreal. Modern turbo engines could definitely learn a thing or two from this legendary engine.
Would I consider one now, not on your life. Oh they are good but not £50k+ good

My UK spec R33 GTR which is also a Series 3.
This is how a standard car should look like...

But, for me the R32 looks great on BBS whilst a R34 Z Tune is a thing of dreams.
I'd never fancied a gtr of any kind but a random test drive really impressed, they have much more character and presence than I'd given them credit for. So I picked up this mnp R33 earlier this year. Underrated cars imo, the ownership enjoyment is a grower as I learn the car's behaviour and limits. The looks have also grown to the point that I prefer the R33 to either the 32 or 34.

I've taken the gamble, although mine is far from standard it's a pretty desirable spec for anyone wanting to go for big power. I'm not looking to retire on the profits but I'm hoping in a few years it will cover what its cost me while I get to own one of the iconic Japanese supercars of the 90s.
Gratuitous pic inbound
I spent many an hour looking at p45fta awful number plate btw. Perfect spec. The r33 is overpriced for that it is now. The s14 will be next in line to inflate to these ridiculous prices.Gratuitous pic inbound

Bit of a strange post lol. I assume you saw it when the previous owner had it down in Kent? The plate is the one that was issued to the car when it was imported, it's not a private plate of mine or the previous owner. I've kept it because it's a digit short and fits in the smaller Japanese recess a bit neater. Back on topic. The OEM wheels are really nice, but an inch too small. They look lost in the swollen arches, especially on the V Spec with the deeper front splitter
There's an impressively dedicated R33 owner's blog here http://www.r33gt-r.com/
The similarities between R32, R33 and R34 are such that I can't see the prices staying that different - they're all basically the same mechanical package. So I agree, we must be approaching 'last call' for RB26-engined cars at reasonable prices.
RX-7 is a different sort of car with its own pros and cons; IMO it's not a very direct alternative. In an ideal world I'd have both (plus an NSX)

Go to Omori Factory and get a new R33:

Dino did a nice write up of what refresh upgrades Nismo offers to bring it up to the 2010s:

I wouldn't be interested in an R33/34 unless it was running big power, and that probably devalues them. Don't they rot too ?
no more so than any other car from the late '90ssuspension tops in the engine bay can be a particular point to watch and as usual the rear wheel arches.
imported jap cars are normally spotless and virtually rustless (if thats a word?!!)

Car with high BHP tend to cost more than equivalent cars with OEM set-ups. The only exception to this are the very special editions and perhaps the super low mileage cars.R33/34 seem to rot more than the R32s but they are no worse than other cars and better than many. As is often the way the wheel arches can go and on the R33/34 the front suspension turrets go. They have a multi layered design which traps water. If they look rusty they are typically done for underneath. On the plus side the cost to repair isn't too silly with places like Zealou5 offering excellent outcomes.
Having driven both an R33 and R34 gtr, there really is little difference in how they both drive. Maybe you'd notice on a track, but in the road it's negligible. I'd say the r33 feels better put together, with fewer squeaks and rattles.
The r34 seems to be a great investment though- not where I'd put my money, but can understand why people do.
I would really like a go in an r35, to see how the gtr story has evolved.

I've always thought that the R33 was the ugly-duckling of the group. However, over the years, i've really started to like them and knowing the much lower values of them makes them look much more appealing.
Anyone who's after one should get in quick because it won't stay this way for long. I'm sure they will eventually follow suite with the R32's and the R34's once people realise this and horde them.
