I'm on my third now, gotta love the practicality of them.

Started with a Passat 170 diesel

Then took a 3 year lease on this

Ended up keeping it for 5, but then my commute came right down so now my daily is this

Absolutely loving it, does everything really well.

Camping again last weekend:

Only issue this time was the amount of light as it was a full moon.

I saw another Volvo (240) with a full curtain setup enclosing the boot. So good.

Hey man. Thanks for replying and it was that model albeit red I think black or white stripes, deffo a 2.7.
I saw your post earlier with you Audi. Where was your road trip? The ring?
I see you're in Dublin, I'm co Down so not far and I studied in Dublin, lived Templeouge. It's changed a lot since early 90s.
We're blessed with great drives here. I'm just back from Leitrim, Donegal, Tyrone etc. Gorgeous weather and scenery.
What cars you got now?
That was a road-trip down to the Ring and then the Eifel Rallye, a great few days away that I’ll aim to do again in the future

I find that higher-powered stuff is a bit wasted sometimes on our twisty Irish roads, of which there are many, so it’s great to get them over to Germany to really stretch the legs. Some of my favourite roads here though are in Wicklow, so not too far away from Dublin, and also the stretch of old road that runs between Carlow and Waterford, especially now that the motorway takes most of the traffic away from them

I still have the B5 RS4 and an ML55, but my MINI GP1 is the most fun car I’ve driven on the twisty Irish roads and would be the last one I’d get rid of I think. Hot hatches just make so much sense here for many reasons

And yes, Dublin has changed enormously in the last couple of decades. Unfortunately our motor and registration tax laws haven’t though! frown

Some fantastic roads up around Donegal too. What car did you take for the drive?[/quote

Oh we were in the E320 CDI estate. Good car for the journey although the front suspension I think needs a refresh, passed MOT recently but Indy said it would be due soon. He said I'd notice it more once the engine and box mounts were changed and I do.
The estate is great for touring as you can chuck so much in. Only drawback I'd say to saloon is it's a bit noisier especially as one of the back seat latches likes to rattle against the bar when closed. Not as noticeable when it's not latched.
Oh yes Wicklow mountains as great I like the Glendalough area. I've never been Wexford direction. Must make a point of going.

Fan of estate cars here. Had 2 x XC70, 1 x V70R and 1 x C5 (less said the better).

Currently have my second XC70 and it genuinely is a brilliant car for all round family life. Days out, dogs, dump runs, bike transport...etc etc, it just does it all. You may have seen my dull thread here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... I just wish sometimes it was a bit more fun. In hindsight I shouldn't have sold the V70R, but the ride got tiresome.

Can't find a picture with stuff in it, but have found one with stuff on it.

Some of the cars in this thread are lovely, inspiration for my next car as I don't know what I want (which is a first for me)

Here's the Carrera in reverse dragging it's arse with nine bags of mud in the boot - It done me proud over the bank holiday.

Much missed 9-5, remap and exhaust gave it 330bhp-ish, need for an offroad tow car meant it went.

A few pics of the Crown. Sold a week ago, great car, probably my favorite but there is always something else to try

Took it on the NC500 and it was superb

Estates are great - but two estates are greater - two grey estates are greatest.

I messed up and did it the wrong way round. New job, potentially a fair bit of driving, love of the beach and surfing and paddleboarding. I thought "I know, I'll get a new estate car". So got an Octavia diesel auto to go along with my MG TF which is only used for summer fun.

Start new job, find out if I'm travelling more than 100 miles, I have to use a hire car, so my new estate sits on the drive most days and just goes to the beach.

I should have bought a new drop top 2 seater and then swapped the MG for an old Occy estate as a beach car - something I wouldn't worry about scratching. Still, you live and learn.

And to top it off, Mrs Nik said "don't buy a new car until you've started your job. See how it goes first" she said. I hate it when she's right. And now that also means I can't really admit I was wrong and swap cars as I'll never hear the last of it and all the money I wasted!

Strange timing as I bought my 1st Estate car last year, an 06 plate manual E91 BMW 325i.

I liked it, but found that to get some decent progress you really did need to head for the red-line.

But I don't really need an Estate, so last month I bought a 55 plate manual E90 330i with the seemingly rare split/fold rear seat option as well as power-fold mirrors, electric glass sunroof, Bi-Xenons and a DAB tuner. What a difference - it flies! No wonder 330is were nearly twice the price when I was looking, and still seem to be!

Anyway back to the timing - I sold the E91 last night!
Just thought I'd add some photos. laugh

Recently reduced my estate count from three to two and now down to one... her 07 Volvo V50 diesel. My frankly outstanding timing thus meant said V50 was dragged kicking a screaming from it's usual role of going to the shops, ferrying a small human and half of the Early Learning Centre around and being used to mow down assorted local wildlife, and instead was thrust into full on family holiday mode. Given said small humans buggy is about the size of a small lorry, the boot is all but used up and given my unwillingness to load above the window line and drive with the lights pointing at the stars... a roof box was sourced for full on middle aged, Volvo driver scene points. Said roof box swallowed the entire contents of the house with ease, because wifey dictates entire contents of the house are needed for even the smallest excursion these days. She was most delighted by this increase in load capacity and so bought more shoes. Said V50 coped well over the 978 miles, over the sea to Skye and back... even did 58mpg, probably because any notion of speed was quickly drop kicked as wifey finds it hard to sleep when cornering at pace. So I drove instead. Now frantically looking for a second estate again... because bus travel really is grim.

Sold my old Golf runabout just over a year ago, and didn't replace it, but managed to get by...........

Then in July I realised I needed to start carting stuff about a bit more, house stuff, garden stuff, and big stuff in general..... So In August I found this locally and took it for a test drive........

Became mine August 1st last year, and its carried all sorts of stuff including apple tree and pear tree and 3 x 3m fence posts...

Now wish I'd bought one years ago............. smile

I find it hard to imagine how I'd cope without an estate after having one.

Every time I think "I could live without one" and start considering non-estate replacement options I use it as intended and the non-estates go out the window again!
