What's you're "affordable" price in your mind? Focus RS/BMW 140i/Civic Type R/Golf R are all doing something quite impressive at that point already £30kish
Fair question. One man's affordable is quite different from another's. I suppose a bit under £20k for one in a couple of years. I'll have to work hard/have less flashy holidays but it's achievable for me if I'm lucky. You're right that there are many impressive cars around that segment/price point. I'm just arguing that Renault have a habit of making Mégane RS cars fun, I can have one with 5 doors this time, 4WS might bring something new to the table that other cars don't and I don't have to drive around in a car that looks like it escaped from the set of Power Rangers to have one. (I'm very happy for people who like the aesthetic of a Civic Type R, but it wouldn't work for me.)

I agree I couldn't drive the current or last Type R as the wrong side of 20/30/40 lolYou're right that there are many impressive cars around that segment/price point. I'll be interested to drive it, the Focus RS I own is quite the fun drive, involving and rewarding - there are faster straight line hatches but Ford are to be praised for making a fun product and leaving us with a manual, for those same reasons I hope the Megane does the same trick as I think it's important to be able to enjoy a car on its own on a B road not just by seeing how fast you can make other cars disappear in the rear view mirror thanks to an auto boxed launch
The Focus RS is quite interesting in that sense, with its trick 4wd system. I suppose my 4wd experience is with Land Rovers, Nissan Patrols or VAG haldex cars, which put me off the idea a bit. I realise that the Food system is mechanically a very different animal but it's hard to shake the prejudice, I guess.
I previously had the impression that to have decent fun in an RS on the road, you had to be doing silly speeds. I'm guessing from your post that my impression isn't right?

could we see Renault play the game that the Germans usually do? (Good residuals= better future guaranteed value % = lower PCP payments)
Renault have actually done this before with their performance models. Back when the Clio 200 first came out, they did offer some cheap finance deals of £200 deposit at £200 a month or something in that region. I think it may have been a PCP and i can't quite remember the term but it was pretty good value. They also did it not long long ago on their last batches of the 265/275 Megane, before they stopped being made. They were leases and were something like 3 months up front, 2 year deal at around £250 per month. I think it could have been tweaked to suit but that's what i was looking at, anyway.

I certainly enjoy it, just point the thing at some corners and it rewards, I'd even say that when I was running in/being mechanically sympathetic when new it was still a pleasure to drive on bends off boost.I previously had the impression that to have decent fun in an RS on the road, you had to be doing silly speeds. Hopefully the R.S manages to keep true to it's lineage when it lands

Thanks. That's an interesting perspective from a real world owner.Hopefully the R.S manages to keep true to it's lineage when it lands

Crikey, I know it was a run out model, but that's cheap for that type of car.nickfrog said:
I don't know if you're more obsessed about the Focus RS or about soiled nappies.
Either way you have serious issues.
Car choice is subjective so "ranking" 2 cars that you haven't driven makes you look very silly, again.
Which one of us has 'serious issues' when it is you following me around passing comment on everything I say? It's a forum, a place for opinions to be expressed - including ones that might not be in agreement with yours. Doesn't give you the right to go around abusing others. Either way you have serious issues.

If that's what you call an "opinion" ?

Megane RS > Focus RS.
Sounds to me like an arbitrary ranking about a subjective choice involving two cars you haven't driven, then yes your "opinion" is really open to ridicule, but that's self-inflicted.If you feel that I have abused you then I apologise. On the other hand let me praise your restraint in not mentioning soiled nappies.
Still, why do you have such an issue with the FRS ?
Got to say, I've been looking up second hand Mégane RS's for sale after spending too long watching videos of the upcoming one.
Family needs rule out a 3 door for now, but a Mégane RS is such an automotive itch I want to scratch.
I imagine others feel the same way about a Focus RS our a Civic Type R. Or several different flavoured VAG cars. Each to their own; ranking is a bit artificial. We're lucky to live in a golden age for the hot hatch.

Yup, much agreed! There's really nothing even remotely 'bad' in that sector as of now. All have their own little strengths and weaknesses, but on the the whole? Yum! We are spoilt for choice, as long as one likes the basic recipe. Personally, if I had to buy right now, it would be between a Golf 7 P (dirt, dirt, cheap with current incentives in .de) and a M140i (last of I6 RWD hatches). The new Meggie is only making things more complicated .
What I really like about the Renault -- a part from what looks like a very promising car -- the outfit that designs & builds it, Renault Sport, is to me a first rate 'petrol head reservation' inside a huge corporate entity. There's tradition there, not much different to say BMW's M shop. And while the rest of the competition is really very good at the moment, I would not bet on say the first Golf 8 GTI or the next Audi S being anything noteworthy. A new RS product though? Special people will have taken special care.
@BF: fingers crossed .
Exciting times in the hot hatch market....I so hope its a winner. I've never owned one (toyed with the idea of buying a 250 Cup a couple of years ago), but have admired the last two RS Megane an awful lot. Mk1 230 F1 was my favourite at first and then the 250/265 cup models...
This segment is awash with talent right now, Its never been stronger IMO since the 1980s heyday of the hot hatch and the difference now is that these hyper hatches will on a track live with cars from the next segment up, such as an M3/M4, Audi RS4/5.

I think it's patently obvious that the Megane RS will be the daddy of hyper hatches!!! Can't believe how excited I am about it.
