I’m upgrading the mk6 Golf GTTDi in the new year and It’s time to try Quattro, manual not DSG. I live in Derbyshire and the weather is perpetually grim. Do you think a mk2 8j TTS is going to be of concern? It’s an older model, manual two door. But an S model no less.

The, finger in the wind, trend seems to be for uber hatches. Easier to get your thug pals in and out the back.

Sorry to hear that. As I've said I've always wanted a performance car and felt an S5 was a good compromise of fun and practicality but despite it being unlikely to happen it does make your more of a target and these thrives are horrible bds.

The odds it happens to you are small unless a big risk area but can understand your apprehension over getting another.

It's sad that because of these scum people feel they cannot have nice things.

I have a 2012 Focus ST, back in February I was in bed asleep until I heard a Big Bang, at first I thought it must be the cats pissing about downstairs a knocked something over so I went downstairs to find all the cupboard doors/drawers open. They had used a blowtorch on the pvc door then mole grips to snap the barrel, pushed the barrel through then let themselves in. I’m not afraid to say it was fking terrifying not knowing if there was someone still in the house (the cellar door had been opened so I had to go and check) luckily they didn’t get the keys as they were upstairs with me, but they took my wife’s handbag containing about £400. Police were absolutely useless, weren’t interested. But whatever you have, someone will always want to steal from you. I work hard and love cars so if I want a nice car then I’m having one. I could spend £500 on a heap of st and someone will still take it if the chance was given. Since the break in I’ve installed those anti-snap locks, CCTV, steering wheel lock and a wheel clamp. So hopefully they’ll give me a miss next time.

Its all about risk and what the base level of risk in your area and that you will accept.

As I have said in other threads, you are more likely to crash a car than have an S3 robbed (based on national figures) - and we don't say 'dont get that car you will crash it', but you do increase your risk by having a nicer car.

As someone else mentions the S3 seems to rank high on the risk of theft because its quattro, it's rapid, it's 5 door, but also its conspicuous (ish) to the every day person who may just claim its one of them A3's and lets face it there are a lot of them about (A3's). These thefts tend to be by guys who don't want confrontation - but some as with the poor fella above, will still break into a house for keys.

So other S cars dont tend to rank as highly in the robbing stats - but there is still that risk.

I know a lad round the corner from where i live (a nice area) who had a M3 in lovely spec in his garage and lads with shotguns knocked on his door and told him to get the car out the garage. They are also doing the risk reward calculations in their head and felt the risk was worth the M3. The police believed his gates - wooden and non see through, made him more a target as they could knock on his door and make threats knowing no one else would see them from the road.

Worth mentioning that there is a neighbour round the corner from me with a S3 saloon and its not been robbed to this point (roughly 18months).

Ultimately it is your tolerance to risk and what the risk is for (like any life choice btw - we think bayesian, so your devision will be impacted by past experiences but also waited toward the idea the risk is greater following reading this thread).

I decided against a new S5 for now on the basis I don't want my young family being upset by some incident. Now i know I am overweighting the risk, however the upset that it would cause (if it happened) is not worth it for a car - despite me loving them.

There seems to be a problem with S/RS Audis, typically they were owned by well to do middle class types, back the in 80s and 90s they just weren't on the radar of scumbags, but now they are a big deal for them.

Watching the "st driving caught on cam" thread and there have been a few very road ragey types with them.

They are great but I would just avoid them if you live anywhere near big towns or cities, plenty of other stuff that goes as well that just doesnt come intot heir thinking.

If I was getting an S/RS car, I would get one in an unusual and brighter colour. Criminals will veer towards the usual Navy/Silver/Black i.e. discrete. So get something brighter.

I was disappointed with colour options on the audis as bar the nardo grey they are all very run of the mill.

Do love the yas marina blue and Austin yellow on the M4 when was looking at them.

You drive that far in that colour and everyone says "look at that " so robbers may not want that.

I guess it depends what they're stealing it for. If its for a job, then yes, but many seem to be disappearing into chop shops and then broken for parts. You regularly see Audi RS and BMW M-car interiors for sale on eBay by private sellers. Some are undoubtedly genuine, but I'd bet many are sourced from stolen vehicles.

From 8mins in this video, shows a 'chop-shop' when a M2 was tracked back to it...

Personally I'd think that model is a low risk as far as theft goes, theft for parts of older models seems much lower than newer ones & theft for getaway cars are generally 5 door super hatches.

That said I'd still get some decent door locks no matter what car I had after seeing how crap standard euro locks are.

Didn’t know where to post this, but I think I’d posted here before..
Just got the call that I’m summoned to court after the attempted theft of my GTI last year. Two guys with hammers, one puts the drivers window through and reached in but I managed to drive away, and led them on a merry chase through a bit of Birmingham before I managed to bounce over a central reservation and boot it out of there. I’ve spent the time since being angry and pissed off about it, but now I’ve found that as I’m the only one out of their group of targets that got away and didn’t get the st kicked into them or get run over or whatever, I am worried about going. I talked a good game to the near and dear family about it about how huge my bks are and they couldn’t drive, and was quite content that I kept the car and they knew nothing of me, but there’s decent CCTV footage of it happening so if they don’t have goldfish memory it shall be obvious when I speak who I am. Any one got any tips for dealing with this? Is this a case of grow a ball or two and just get on with it? Not a UK native so having to tell the courts who I am feels bad, I just moved in with my fiancée

Witness protection? Surely they could blank your face from the video and allow you to present your evidence without the accused seeing who you are. Even potentially using a false name.

Nothing to be proud of, but I’ve had the pleasure of being in court on more than one occasion so I know most of the ins and outs so to speak. You can appear behind a curtain and give evidence without anyone seeing you if that helps.
