It really is a shocking world we live in and it will continue until the time fits the crime.

I had a hawkeye Impreza sti. I previously lived on quite a busy street in a nice village in Leeds. I came home one Friday night about 10pm and left the car outside the house. The gf the was at the window and proceeded to tell me that someone in a mask had watch me park up and then walked off.

It was the school holidays so I didn't think too much of It, but I did move to gthe car on to my awkward drive and went to bed. I was woken by the girlfriend at 1am on a Friday to let me know that 4 lads in balaclavas and masks were outside the house looking around the car. The moved to the back garden (still visible from the road) and set about trying to get through the French doors, with my dog poo shovel from the garden. In my wisdom i decided to head downstairs with the ldog and open the curtains to let them know I was there with a big dog. Erm it didn't go well..... they just stepped back with shovel and put it through the window and came in the house. The gf went upstairs to call the Police whilst I thought I was Bruce lee for about 5 seconds.

I ran upstairs with the following and pinned the bedroom door shut. They continued to try boot the door in and managed to get the shovel round whilst shouting get on the bed and no one gets hurt. After a while the door gave and I let them in. The dog was under the bed (great guard dog but I'm pleased in a way) and the gf was hysterical. I was ok bar some cuts and bruises and given the delay I had managed to create they managed to get some watches but left the car as the police were on the way and it would have taken ages to get off drive.

The police were useless in all honesty and I never got my stuff back. The neighbours never heard a thing either!

All I learned from it is, If they want to come in, they are coming in regardless and if nobody knows what they will do personally in the situation. I was stupid as it could have ended badly, but instinct took over.

Sorry for the long post
scary sh!t!

so in hindsight what would you do now?

better security, leave keys downstairs easy to find, buy different car, not engage, leave them to it?

Wow, that must have been terrifying!

But, like others, I would say this is the exception, not the rule. Most are opportunistic and do not want to get caught; they would flee if there was a delay or things didn't go 'to plan' because - sadly - there is plenty of opportunity out there.

What these worst case scenarios should be saying to everyone is to consider security! How much do people spend on cars, modifications and trackdays versus security?

Looks like owning one of these cars means you also need to have a secure door on a bedroom. Hinge bolts, 2 locks/bolts plus a mobile phone and something like a tool box or sports equipment.

Oh, those rubber door wedges are also good for keeping them shut.

As far as I'm concerned, if someone is so determined that they'll smash through doors and windows to get to my car keys, then they can have them. The last thing I'd do it then put up further barriers for them to encounter once they are actually in the house.

Just lock all interior doors it's the best way to slow progress through the house

I actually have no idea. Sensible option is to let them have it, but It was just instinct that took over. I am in no way a fighter, all I did was let them know I was there and that was it. All hell broke loose. I can laugh about it now, but it was a serious wtf moment after it had happened .

I should also point out I kept car another 2 years. I refuse to let people dictate what I should drive due to living in fear

Locks on every internal door? What do I do when one of my kids gets up and fancies a drink of milk in the middle of the night. I'm sorry, but if you're going to these lengths then you have in a way let the criminals win by being scared in your own house.

<nods>
Sometimes, you have to acknowledge that either you're paranoid, or you need to move to a different area.

I'm amazed how many people seem to think having CCTV on your home is normal.

You leave your fking keys downstairs then.
The secure bedroom is to keep you safe.

I have two young children who regularly get up and bother myself and my wife in the middle of the night.

Honestly though, if I thought I was at that much of a risk I'd have no hesitation in doing everything I could do move to an area at less risk.

Locking yourself in your bedroom every night? Sorry mate, but that is bonkers.

Not every fking night, only if you're being broken into.

And the area makes no difference. We already know they travel to get what they want.

Some people really don't have a clue.

They don't work.
Neighbours van got broken into last night. Their dog barked a couple of times which stirred the owners...but they just went back to sleep.
So unless the dog sleeps outside in a little hut (dodgy breakers yard style) I doubt they're much use in the dead of night.

You can buy little GSM based GPS trackers from eBay for a fiver which work perfectly - hide it under the dash behind a vent (needs a 5v supply). You'll need a SIM card as well. Remember test it every so often as they do sometimes need a reboot.

A gun it appears...

Case currently in court: a bloke got hold of a gun, applied for a license and was turned down , but kept it anyway.

Burglar came along, he shot the bloke dead. Charged with firearm offence, but not charged with the killing.

Paintball gun with solid plastic "practice balls" dial up the power, even the most determined scrote won't weather a hail of rubber bullets in the face and nuts, if he gets blinded, too bad.
