When I bought my 2014 Audi S1 I negotiated the next scheduled service to be free of charge ... it's a major one and I dropped it off this morning.

Just had a call to say the Haldex fluids are due which is about £120 and in order to maintain the warranty I need a sunroof service (I assume this is just a clean and grease) and this will cost £85.

Neither is covered free of charge. Christ whatever next!!!

Ask for a service schedule showing where it specifically says this is a requirement. Holding your warranty to ransom like that isn't legal I'm sure.

Just spoken to Audi Customer services and they confirmed it is a requirement!!!!!!!!!!!

If I had a problem with the sunroof and it hadn't been 'serviced' then it wouldn't be covered. I should probably just take the risk but I've authorised the work. I'll be checking it thoroughly to make sure it's been done though!!

Licence to print money?

Fair enough to check the drains as that might cause corrosion if blocked... but surely just an extra step in its service schedule which should be included.

Looking around they use krytox paste which helps keep things quiet and lubricated. Krytox comes in a few forms, but is patented by Dupont.

Some of the cost is definitely from that (I have some of the liquid form (GPL 105) from BMW and even that small bottle was £38).

Audi clearly use Krytox GPL 205 (GPL 105 with PTFE to form a paste).

Perfectly normal.

You say you negotiated your "next service" free which is what I'm sure they're offering i.e. either a minor or major service at no cost. Neither the Haldex or sunroof services would be covered under either of those.

If you didn't have the sunroof service, the warranty on the sunroof may not remain valid however I don't believe they can void the entire car's warranty as a result. Saying that though, I would imagine a fault with a sunroof could get very expensive, very quickly if out of warranty.

What actually is "Haldex oil"? Is it the oil the clutch sits in (I think modern Haldex systems tend to be wet clutch)? Does it really need replacing every three years?

Correct and exactly what they said.

Haldex fluid fair enough I can understand although it's pretty expensive.

I was just shocked as I'd never heard of a sunroof service!

So my 'free' service is still costing me £200. Sounds about right ha!

To be fair most failures with sunroofs is caused by lack of maintenance but £85 is taking the proverbial. It should be part of the service with just the grease used on the invoice.

On the other hand, you could do it yourself and void the warranty on the sunroof as it's very, very unlikely to fail during the warranty period. More likely after 10 or 15 years.

If those 2 items needed servicing, why wouldn't they be included on the service schedule ?

Agreed with Blaster72 i.e. the sunroof should be inspected and greased (if necessary) as part of a normal service.

ETA: sparky - because when a manufacturer refers to a "service", they're referring to the standard scheduled servicing and not extra services like Haldex, DSG etc.

I still don't believe that. If they want it to be mandatory then it should be in the schedule. I was told in a serious voice that our car was "overdue its a/c service", but of course there's no mention of that in the service book.

I hate VAG for this stuff - have had it with SEAT and VW. Things like brake fluid are "mandatory" but they won't do it under the service plan as "it's not a scheduled service item". How is "change at 3yrs, then every 2yrs" not a schedule?

VW now only first two services free, and dealer offered us a deal on the next two that would cover all servicing and "with nothing to pay on the day". Yet it excludes brake fluid, and of course Haldex and DSG. When I looked at the quote they'd included an a./c service!

Would it not be rather odd if the Haldex needs servicing to maintain the warranty but isn't part of the standard scheduled servicing? Surely the manufacturer can't just make up new things that need doing to maintain the warranty which aren't documented on the service schedule?

We have Mercedes, Honda, Mitsubishi and VW in the family and VW is the only one where the service plan leaves you still having to pay money. Honda and Mitsubishi even include brake fluid change as part of the normal major service - it's not a separate item.

Buy a Merc service plan and everything that needs doing is covered.

VAG give an attractive (but still not cheap) upfront price then scam customers with extra costs that are out of all proportion. How much time will the mechanic spend greasing the sunroof for £85?

Quoted £175 for an oil change on my RS4 last week. And that's with me providing my own oil.
