So my 2011 E220 with 380k on the clock broke down today. Came off the motorway after c.30 miles at 50-70mph stopped at a T junction, pulled away to about 50 quite slowly and all the lights came on the dash and lost all power. Tried to restart 5-6 times really slow to turn over turned a couple of times then died.

Thought it was the battery / alternator.

Parents came out with jump leads, battery was showing 12v but only 8v cranking. So jumped and bingo started up. Made a lot of top end noise for 5-10 seconds then seemed ok. I assumed lack of oil from dry cranking. Drove the 30 miles home at 50mph. Seemed to drive fine.

As I came off the motorway to drive the couple of miles home it started knocking. Oh dear. Got home and the water temp was a bit higher than normal. 95c ish.

Made it onto the drive at home and it was running really rough. Turned off. Had a look under the bonnet all looks normal the only issue is the block is scorching hot. Took the oil cap off and quite a bit of smoke coming out. Cams looked a bit dry.

I suspect oil pump?

Is this even possible? I would have thought oil pump was chain driven or gear driven?

Water pump would show as very hot water temp and boil over.

It runs but very rough and makes some baaaad noises, metallic clunking and loud squeaking...

Anyone got any advice? Really liked this car frown

380k miles? yikes

That isn’t bad going at all and shows they’re a strong engine. Can’t help with what’s wrong with it though I’m afraid

They are known for going much further than that, twice as far, it has FMBSH if that counts for anything LOL.

So some research points to oil pump. Basic test is to turn over with oil cap off. Screeching sound is probably crank bearings gone. If no oil comes out of the oil cap it's not looking good

Does your oil pressure light not work?
Its not hard to drop the sump and change the shells and oil pump on those if its the same engine as the van version.

Not sure if it has one, there are no lights on the dash and no CEL.

Ran it with the oil cap off and there is a small amount of oil circulating but I expected a lot more.

Just been and looked can't see oil warning light. Looking online the oil pump looks gear driven not chain driven which means it's not likely to fail ? Checked all belts and they all look ok. Running rough though if it was petrol I would say coil pack

Does the oil pressure telltale prove out at key-on?

It does not have an oil pressure light / gauge that I can see.

I've been running one since June and hoped to get 400,000, just like my Volvo V70D5.

You, sir, have spoiled my day....irked

Just get a new (used) engine, surely?

£2500 + fitting (£500).

Not worth it on a car with that many miles IMHO.

Its worth probably £5k ish. Looks like I will get about £3k for it for spares / repairs.

You should be able to get an engine cheaper than that, have you tried Dronsfields in Oldham? I used to source lot of secondhand engines from there when I was with an independent Mercedes specialist.

That's exactly who I went too. That's the cheapest they have at the moment.
