Still to be 100% confirmed, but the rumours emanating from my mechanic are that the "lower turbo" (is that the big or small one??) needs to be replaced. I was quoted £2600. Now whilst I trust my mechanic, this is not the sort of amount I want to fork out to replace a single part if I can possibly help it.

Cheapest new price I can find for either turbo on my car is about £1400 which is cheaper than the presumably direct from BMW price my mechanic has come up with but still leaves me with a hefty bill.

A recon turbo comes in closer to £500 - anyone have any good experiences with these and care to name the supplier? Some are warranted for 12 or 14 months - my mechanic is reluctant to fit one of these, but he would if I pushed it.

I assume it is not possible to buy a borg warner K26 or KP39 for another can and expect it to fit??

If anyone has any tips then I am all ears, many thanks...

Firstly, it should be making a whining noise when driving around at 2k or less rpm. It should also be low on power in that range too.
The M57 engine uses the K26 and KP39 BorgWarner turbochargers, this could be the same in the 40d but they use the newer N57 block but same turbochargers (possibly.) Checking on realoem, the 'lower' turbocharger seems like the bigger one that gives all the boost at the top end, and doing some digging suggests that it is the K26 turbocharger - part number 11657808363. Prices are bang on too.

It's a big job, I would get a trusted independent BMW specialist to do it for you as they would be able to do it best.

Thanks - I think it's the other turbo which is more expensive. Still a little cheaper than the BMW price though. I think I'm going to go recon from turbo technics...

Thanks for your help. I think you're spot on. The recon part comes with a 2 yr warranty and costs 550 so I think I'm going to go with that...

Turbo Technics should do a good job.
