Do dealers really think pompous long winded adverts work?

Things that go like this:

Purchased by a Mr Bloggs, a justice of the peace and founder of a Royal Warranted light engineering firm from Messrs Smith and Jones, the then main agent for (insert car make) in North Norfolk, in October 1973, the car spent the next decade serving family duties including yearly trips to the Isle of Man.

The provenance indicates that a new custodian was sought in 1983, one Major Floggem-Thrash exported the car to South Africa where it resided until a well known and titled gentleman repatriated it via his summer residence in Gibraltar, eventually finding its way to the UK where it shared garaging with the owner's (insert various posh cars) and was naturally maintained by (Insert some garage you've never heard of) the accepted masters in the fastidious care of these rare and refined motor cars.

Now being generously offered to a new custodian who will continue this remarkable automotive tale...

Then it's POA and some bks about discretion like they were secretly selling the virginity of a princess.

Just fk off!

Does stuff like this work?

Funny thing is if that was abut a watch and on the watch thread, the watch fanbois would lap it up!

One of my favourites is: "We are proud to present.." No you're fecking not, you're just selling a bloody car not letting your daughter go at some debutante ball. Honestly, car dealer bingo.

And sometimes both. Shock horror, sometimes we pay over book for stuff we want to buy. Stop the press.
Of course, but what makes a car "stuff we want to buy"?

I'm assuming it's cars you'll sell yourself, rather than punt out to trade, so simply reasonably specced and maintained, and not in a ste colour? Or is it sometimes that you're actively looking for a car in a particular colour/spec/condition?

I'm asking as I've previously assumed you'll get a better PX on a newish/low mileage car at a franchised dealer who can put it straight on the forecourt. But last time I tried this I was quoted a WBAC price smile

Also, say if there's a supply shortage of a particular model, and you're paying over book to buy, how long does it take for the book price to rise to reflect this?

The place I bought our old Mini Countryman from (Perrys Canterbury) invited me to a similar thing last week, albeit to buy a new Vauxhall. That went straight in the bin so I'm not sure if their deals were any good or not. Probably the latter.
Is any deal "good" on a Vauxhall?
A great deal of petrol & a match?

You may be on to something there.

Depends on the finance company and on the type of vehicle. Generally the car has to be less than 8 or 9 years old at the end of the agreement.

The dealer selling the car should be able to arrange this, or Mann Island Finance are a national broker but based in your area who offer a range of schemes for all types of vehicle and applicant.

For older "heavy tackle" ( Porsche, Ferrari, Bentley etc ) with big balances schemes are available for High Net Worth individuals and for company directors which have a balloon payment to reduce the monthlies but may not be guaranteed.

Get that all the time if they've been to Vauxhall first "what, you must be kidding, Vauxhall offered me £5000; £3500, what a joke", usually against a new car so Vauxhall are just rolling all the new car offer into the part ex.

TBF we rarely come up against Vauxhall and if we do, they almost always go back there as they are price driven.

People get very emotional over their part exchange, neglecting to see the bigger picture.
That's exactly what my in-laws did in 2012. I told them to go & look at several different brands, incl Hyundai & Kia. In the end they went to Vauxhall & Ford in St Albans only as they are right beside each other. They went to Ford first, and drove a Focus, said they'd let the guy know, and went next door to try the Astra. Being an ex Vauxhall employee (probably for a few weeks only in the 70's) the father in law decides the Astra is the one for him (just like the Astra before it, the Vectra before that, the Belmont before that, etc). The mother in law is feeling guilty at this stage, so pops next door to the Ford garage to let the salesman know. Hearts of gold, and I'm sure the Ford salesman thought what lovely people they were.

I've spent the last week on and off reading the whole thread. Brilliant! Learned loads and it's given me a real inside to the other side of deal. Hats off to you all for keeping it relatively civilised! (Or should that be asshats off to you all!) as an aside with a chronic fetish for Alfa's I'm glad there are none of them on here or I may have to evolve into troll mode........

Well yesterday I think I was a good customer (so far) - car went up on trader at lunchtime, I called them (BMW Peterborough) at 2 asking for a options print out and explanation for MOT fails which was "ok" and paid my deposit at 5pm on the basis they will send me a written summary that the car is vibration free (known fault) and that everything works.

Fingers crossed! I hope the sales guy goes the extra yard on this as Peterborough is a sod to get to from Liverpool.

Sycamore are ok, the cars are prepped pretty well, the BMW salesman not too bad, on the mini side they are good. Parts guys are good. Had I not been flying away this weekend I could have popped down and had a look for you.

Getting here is fine, you can do it by train or car, get them to pick you up from the station if you come down by train. You can get a bus from the centre to the dealer or a taxi would be around £8

Appreciate that - train wise its a million stops or I can hire a car probably train it. As they are independent I feel more confident than a large group - we shall see.

It's a bugger mate - I promise!

Demands and needs have to be sent out / presented. GAP details even have to be sent on a separate email to everything else if dealing remotely.

It is a minefield - the FCA is self-funding and consequently is on the hunt for mistakes at the bigger dealer groups in order to impose the heaviest fines that they can.

The whole industry is on the run from these guys - and in a minute the new DPA rules are going to make life even worse.
Not true
Which bit?

Happy to be corrected (every day's a school day and all that) but if you are going to pull me up on something, please be so kind as to let me know what it is!

Is it normal to arrive to collect your new (used) car from a main dealer to find the jobs you requested be done before sale not done. Then keep you waiting for 2 hours while they were done (it wasn't exactly local, so not worth returning later). It was at the lower end of their price range admittedly, but I was shocked at how bad the overall experience was. Do main dealers now only care about leasing the latest models and just tolerate used car buyers ?
Update on my above post - I sent an email to the garage after I received a letter from them asking about my experience. After a few emails back and forward, they are collecting the car on Monday and leaving me with a new loan car while they sort out the jobs on mine. Saves me a 180 mile round trip and I get an XC60 to play with for a few days.

Shocking behaviour from the garage and no it should be like that, worst case you should of had a phone call to say sorry its not going to be ready can we reschedule, sounds like a very lazy salesman forget what needed doing.

I think they thought it was ready ! Looks like it was a new salesman who wasn't being supervised very well. They are doing a couple of other extra bits too, so I'm happy enough. I may change my tune if it comes back and the work hasn't been done to my satisfaction though !

Why would a salesmen leave a Skoda dealership to work at a Honda one?

Wandering around a Honda showroom this morning while daughter's Jazz was being fettled, a salesman approached. Bit of a chat and he mentioned he'd recently moved which seems odd to me - Honda is absolutely on its arse and Skoda seems to be doing pretty well.
