Yes - I also find making a complete nob out of your customer outside the dealership is not cool. i prefer to get them to send me a snap of the car in their ownership (up the mountain, at the lake, packed with family etc) makes it seem more relaxed and real for potential customers....Imho
One of the main reasons I left my last places, the constant badgering customers for cheesy handover pics and online posting say how happy people are and blah blah, not saying that's not an important part of the job but new car handovers were taking 2-3 hours, I agree I think customers feel happy with a nice handshake a thank you.
And the video walk arounds...hateful.

I had to get 3-5 New BMW's out the door everyday of the last 2 weeks of Christmas. The hand over was swift, for sure!

I had a bit of an unusual sale today (I'm a "driveway trader", all legal I might add).

A really pleasant elderly-ish gentleman came to look at a Honda CR-V 2.0 petrol I was selling.
He didn't even walk round it but loved the look of it (it was very, very tidy for a 2003 car), he sat in it, started it up and said "Ooh, has it got an automatic choke?" hehe

Then, about ten seconds later "I'll have it".

And he did. If only it was always that easy!

What the hell do people do with parcel shelves???
There must be thousands of the things lying around in people sheds, garages etc.
Whenever you mention it to them, it's always "yeah, it's in the garage, shed, loft, I'll pop it in in a day or two"
Almost always never happens, and then you are into stupid money to replace it.

Hah, correct HTP99, forgot about those, recently had a VW Golf in part ex, with all 3 missing, the car looked crap without them.
Phoned customer, no idea where they are, ended up having to buy 3 from a breakers yard for £100.
VW prices were eye watering!! and would take 6 weeks to obtain.
How the fook can you lose 3 headrests????

I have 2 headrests in the garage... 1 for Mrs FB's current Ibiza, and 1 for her old one. In fairness that got written off and I didn't get the chance to pop it back in before they carted it off. They just don't work with some child seats so you end up taking them out.

I don't have any parcel shelves though laugh

And spare wheels, tools, jacks, wheel braces, amazing the number of cars that turn up without them, when they should.
Baffles me to this day.
It's just the rigmarole of having to price up, source, order and replace these things which is a PITA as is the cost.

My old golf GTD rear headrests were massive, so when the dog rested his head in the only place he could (in the middle) you couldn’t see out the rear window. So I got some stubby ones off a Jetta from ebay.

When I went to part ex it I chucked the GTD ones in the car as couldn’t be bothered to swap them back - so mine was actually sold with 2 sets of headrests!

How did a franchised dealer know what vehicles were in the system somewhere before computers?
Manufacturers used to fax huge lists of stock that was in compound, port and at dealers. You called up the sales desk, or the other dealer, and asked for the car.
You can actually search Mercedes dealer stock through the Mercedes Benz website.

Funny you say that - just helped a mate clear his shed and he had a Renault Scenic one, a Chevvy Captiva one and a VW Passat one! All decent quality tonneu covers (Is that how you spell it?)
Ebay quality stuff there.

It's spelled "parcel shelf" smile

A tonneau cover is very different. Usually a soft cover that goes over unoccupied seats in a convertible, or over the load bed of a pickup truck.

we started to use a handover sheet for the part ex now, stuff like checking parcel shelf 2 keys usual stuff. if they have told us they have it and it turns out they don't we will revalue the part exchange at handover, or if they tell us it doesn't come with one value accordingly.

Nothing worse that getting a bill for £200 plus for a shelf lol

I always took parcel shelf to be a fixed size cover that can be removed and a tonneau cover to be something that was flexible, like in my CR-V & Kuga , ad old Vectra Estate come to that, where it extends and ratchets back when unlatched like a roller blind I suppose.

Your description is accurate but not sure it covers all permutations, plus yours is also a fixed size, just soft vs hard.

If its part of the interior of a car it's a parcel shelf (if rigid) or load cover (flexible/retractable, on estates/suvs typically).

A tonneau cover is part of the *exterior* of the car. It's meant to keep water out, to some extent! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonneau
