I did mention the other thread in my first post about this on here. Was just interested to get the insider view on it (which is the whole point of this thread). Wouldn't class that as a 'bee in a bonnet'.

Yes, it looks like everyone has £310 a year to happily p*ss away without a seconds thought...

Lets look at your point about pricing from a different perspective.

Car A is your perfect spec car registered in April 2017 with the extra £310 tax
Car B has lower tax, either because it's older or because it's a lower spec and <£40k new,

How much more would you be prepared to pay for car B, bearing in mind that its older and / or not quite your ideal spec, in order to save £25 per month on tax?
Well you are not comparing apples with apples there. And why would I pay more for car B ?

The point is that two otherwise identical cars March 17 and April 17 are not worth the same. One comes with a £310 per annum liability.

Christ, I'm beginning to wish I hadn't started this rolleyes

I was supposed to be travelling to York from Newcastle tomorrow to look at a car. I've spoken to the dealer on the phone, and mentioned that they had no photos of the interior. Their reply was "someone's going to get their arse kicked because for it to be approved used the ad must show specific things. We'll update the listing straight away and email the photos to you". Three days later still no photos. No point in making a 90 minute journey when they can't even be arsed to take a couple of photos.

Perhaps the seat bolster looks like this horror from a 4 series BMW currently for sale at a BMW main dealer:

I mean. Seriously. 2 years old and under 20k miles. What sort of careless clown must have been using this ? Why on earth would anyone buy it in that state ?

At the risk of becoming the one with the bee, in order for car B to qualify for lower tax it must either be older (possibly by only 1 month) or have been lower cost when new, therefore lower spec.

Given that the overwhelming majority of 17 plate cars will be on the later tax regime then the market price for them will take account of them being taxed higher. Your hypothetical March reg car is the exception rather than the rule.

So your premise should be "How much more should I pay for a March car, if I can find one, compared with all the other 17 plates available" rather than the other way around

I doubt it. It is sheer carelessness. Here is another for sale with the exact same interior but has done 50k miles and is mint:

I'm sure the trade people on here have seen some horrendous examples. I wonder if there is some sort of commonality ? Maybe to do with size of individuals and them squeezing past the bolsters to get in and out ?

Nothing to do with size, its jeans and belts that do it.

Must have been Simon Cowell's car to get belt damage in that position laugh

It's usually bigger framed people and / or less mobile people who tend to "roll" out of the car rather than leaning forward to climb out, placing all their weight on the bolster as they do so.

Do 20k miles in 2 years 10 miles at a time and get in and out ( say owner is a rep in the London area) That's 4000 times your either getting in and out.
Do 50 k miles in 2 years at 100 miles at a time as a National rep and that's 1000 times in and out.

But yes, probably also related to owner size and clothing choice.

Nearly 50% of all 17 plate cars were sold in March 2017 (SMMT website)

I've missed the fun so far smile

Just picked up Mrs SB's new car today which gets hit with the £450 RFL. (1y/o XC60 with monster spec and monster depreciation...)

Do you get people buying a new car under £40K fiugre then adding some trivial option (say floor mats) that tips it *just* over?

BMW 1 series boards are full of this anxiety

But if you need to do it properly buy an A6 or a 5 Series at just under the threshold (lots of choice) and then spec something modest as an option to tip it into Stupid City Road Tax

Over a 4 y PCP a £60 option could turn out to be VERY expensive

Do you warn the punters about this?

Tbh the lack of interest and/or understanding shown over this sounds a bit like the discussion I recently had with a well known pet insurance outfit. Off topic I know, sorry, but querying some stinking premium increases year on year, ones which even the agent commented were a bit steep, they tried to deflect blame onto Govt IPT. Well yes that accounts for 50 pounds of the increase, now about the other 180 pounds increase. Sound familiar? Govt road tax, nothing to do with us Guv.

How common is it with brand new cars for the V5 to be sent out before it's officially registered? It happened with my Fiesta, registered 31/10/06 but I got the first v5 in the post before that date.

So common that in my 16 years of selling cars, I've never, ever heard of that happening, given its all done online with AFRL and I'm sure AFRL was around when I started selling cars; it's impossible!

Same as! AFRL registers the car and DVLA send the V5 after that. Can’t possibly happen the other way round. Are you sure it’s first reg was that date?

Slightly different, but we once picked up a brand new car the day before it was registered.

I’ve delivered cars before reg instead of handing over on first day of new reg but that’s completely different to getting the V5, that’s just not possible
