Can a coupe be accepted into the realm of Barge?

72,000 miles and price under £5k before a haggle with FSH?

I hadn't realised these had dropped into barge terrority with sensible miles on it. Has a V8 - can be very wafty when needed. No cup holder which is a royal pain in the backside though

Oh my - i really must stop looking at AT while on conference calls

Is my love of this piece of motoring history wrong? seems a bargain for under £5k and you could do some weddings in the summer to supplement your running costs. The Kent alloys are worth a few quid on their own. If its as rust free as the photos make out that can only go up in value.

And daimler is so much more gentlemanly than Jaguar.....

Thats very nice for the money, just need to research the engine issues these have and get it checked over.

I think I have permission to attend the Barge meeting this Sunday, sans wife and children. The only question is, which car? I've taken the 124 and the 201 previously, so that leaves the 210 and the 129. Both are in pretty spifferoo condition although neither is on winter rubber.
210 please - I've owned the other cars and would like to see a 'new' one.

In the negative column... Airdrie trader, listed for 3 weeks and last MOT's advisories. In the positives, good price, decent list of options (Xenons, cruise, M-Sport suspension and a rear blind!) and it does look pretty tidy.

SL, no question, for me.

Especially if your route is a very-early-morning blat across the moors to the M6 before heading south.
Hartside Pass (A686 Haydon Bridge to Penrith, best road in the world) at 7am. Hmmm, you might have persuaded me there. If the weather's nice.

That is a yes from me, it seems "cheap" at £4,995 though, when the window says £9,995?

What an understatedly cool way to waft to and from work.

I like these a lot, especially as convertibles, but the many annoying issues everyone seems to have with the V8 (even though they use confirmation bias to try and say that pissing out oil everywhere and then pissing out coolant everywhere is fine for a modern engine in a high end car) are rather offputting.

Were these "quirks" resolved for the x50i engine?

I set up an AT search and alert for these last month with a view to buy either the coupe or convertible next year, but aiming for a thread breaker price level, (based on not going over the 60/70k miles mark), nevertheless they are a lot of car for the money especially the 650i version! If there are known engine issues it would be great to know about them in advance.

Missed your post by 60 seconds dme123, interested to know more, engines, models affected......what are the actual issues, fixes very expensive, or off the scale?!

The biggest pain seems to be the coolant transfer pipe.

"In the 8-cylinder engine a metal coolant pipe connects the water pump to the rear engine coolant passages. The pipe is sealed to the engine crankcase using rubber O-rings. These O-rings fail over time, causing a coolant leak in the valley of the engine. This coolant leak usually appears on the ground, at the rear of the engine in the transmission bell housing area. The pipe is tucked away under a valley pan that lives under the intake manifold. There are a few repair options for when the pipe O-rings fail. You can use a BMW factory part, but this requires removing the front timing cover, including the timing chains and front end of the vehicle. This method can take a few days to complete. A few aftermarket companies developed a way to repair the pipe without removing the timing cover housings. You cut the pipe out of the valley, then install an expanding pipe into the engine and secure the O-rings and pipe in place with pressure from the expanding pipe."

I gather it's less than a grand for the expanding pipe, however I've heard some mixed things about long term success.

On top of that they seem to have numerous oil leaks for a modern engine.

Not tragically bad, but more trouble than I can be bothered with on a £5k car!

Basically a short-sighted and daft piece of design which now needs expensive attention. I'd avoid to be honest, and I still can't get on with the looks of the 6.

I love that. Pity it's cream rather than a bolder colour which would avoid the wedding car tag, but what a thing.

If you want a 6 with less hassle then it's got to be an earlier 630i.

A V8 would be great but I can understand not wanting the potential hassle the 645/650i can offer over the straight 6.

Another vote for the 210 here.

I had an 04 645 cabriolet for 2 years - no problem at all with the hood or oil leaks. Gearbox developed a fault at 75k which may have been sorted with a flush but I sold it before I had chance.
Great cars IMHO but exhaust very muted. The 19” ellipsiod wheels were prone to cracking but I would imagine most cars if this age with FSH would have had the normal issues rectified already.

I don't ever recall having seen cloth 'Sports' seats in an E39 before.....?
