The eight cylinder Jaguar XJ6 is a very rare car, it must be worth a lot of money

That Jag does look excellent for under a grand.

Photographed in the wet, which can cover a multitude of (lacquer peel) sins, and a nasty scuff to one of the corners...

... But still, a V8 Jag for less than £1,000. biggrin

I’m a little bit worried that all of the documentation is upside down ... is there a fix for this?

If you buy it I'll sort it - FOC - all comes with the service from my finders fee of £295

Very thread W140 1993 600SEC coming up for auction at Brightwells next week. 2-3k estimate.

180k miles, early M120 engine with plenty of design flaws, from the dodgy wiring loom era, ADS suspension, all things that would surely be a receipe for disaster.

But

"The car has been meticulously maintained by its enthusiast owner with a considerable file of receipts for all major works carried out, totaling around £18,000 (!). Major works carried out include replacement of the engine bay wiring loom, new starter motor and alternator, head gaskets and valve stem seals, timing chains and water pump, PSE vacuum pump, front calipers, discs and pads, brake hoses.

The history file also includes the owners pack, manuals and service book showing 23 stampsto warrant its 184,200 miles (nothing for a Mercedes V12!) including diff & gearbox oil changes, 8 old MOT's and a current MOT until March 2018."

I think there’s a big clue in the picture of how much it costs to keep one of these in good condition.

I think he means “Live in a shack” but that might just be a bespoke garage ...

True. It was in Newmarket once upon a time and I seem to remember the late Sir Henry Cecil owned one. Definitely something about having one of the only ones in the country... Quick internet research confirms that when he got a sizeable 2nd offence drink-driving ban in 2000 (after side-swiping two pensioners with his wing mirror) he was driving a blue Mercedes. If it was Henry's once upon a time then it would likely stink of cigarette smoke.

Those trailers park homes are often sold as holiday properties so let's be charitable towards someone who has lovingly tended this moneypit.

That's quite sad. Someone bought what was a very expensive car in 1993, went for the crappy miser engine to save a few pennies, and it probably STILL hasn't done enough miles for the hateful coal fired mill to pay for itself a quarter of a century later. Now we are left with what could be a nice old BMW, ruined.

I bet whoever bought that is one of the same people who trade in a 2 year old car for a new one that has £40 per year lower VED.

Consider yourself indulged! I don't know how you could have parted with any of those, although the E34 is the best to my eye. That said, you really can't beat an E38 in Biarritz Blue on those radial spoke wheels, especially with the de-chrome. I wish I'd spotted the 750i that was listed earlier in the thread. I'd chop my w210 for that in the blink of an eye.

I agree, but that does assume the miles were spread evenly over its life and that it hasn’t been clocked. Most likely it was utterly pointless and the buyer should have chosen a 525i or above

Even more silly in 1993 when there were no tax benefits. It was higher band by displacement and there wasn’t emissions-based taxation. So it really was just to save 3p in fuel per year over a 520i

To add, the BMW 2.5TD engine of that era (as also fitted in the Omega and P38 RR IIRC) wasn't very frugal anyway. Smokey too.

I used to sell cars many moons ago to people like this, usually of the older generation, who would trade in a 3 year old car as the new Fiesta/Fusion etc had £30 road tax instead of the £115 of their old Fiesta. "Yes but it's £30 road tax so it makes sense to buy it".
1.4 tdci and they would come back 2 years later to trade it in with 8k miles on the clock.

I had the misfortune of travelling to the airport this morning, but decided to use the SL - sub zero temps, frost on the car - ideal for a roof free refreshment.

There was a rather loud bang when putting the roof down shortly before this photo was taken - it was the plastic rear windscreen deciding to fragment. Such is life!

Any recommendations for SL soft-top screens that don't explode in sub zero temperatures?

It was a lovely drive, and I intend to keep driving the car in such conditions.
Bad luck there. I had mine replaced last year, non Merc window plastic, thinner and feels more pliable, so I assume it will be less likely to crack at lower temps, that is probably wishful thinking on my part.

I have already chickened out and put the hard top on, I like the extra head room you get with the hard top.

Whilst we are on the subject of R129 plastic window replacement, does anyone have any recommendations on who to do this in the South East please ? Mine has a few small splits starting to appear.
