I was going to say that, but fearing I was out of step with the majority, thought I'd best keep my views to myself. The blue-ringed one does look good though.
Trust your instincts mon Géneral! The essence of this thread is the ability to proudly state opinions that might not be in agreement with the majority, and not get called on it (except in a slightly jocular way - (or if it’s about a Honda Legend wink )

Differing opinions here are to be cherished, digested & meditated upon so we can all improve our barge knowledge. Speaking of which...

Is this permissible as a mini-barge?

No, and I'd call that a nano-barge biggrin

Rare though, I remember a school friend's dad having a 21 Monaco in that colour combo.

I love those little Monacos, but not at that price!

Just a gentle (and good natured) ribbing, old chap. smile We don't allow out-and-out hate on this thread.

Back on topic, I like the blue-ringed centre caps, though availability and cost may end up dictating which set you end up fitting.

OK, cheap labour rates, but where do they sell them ? Certainly not in any LHD country, right?

I'd say they sell them in parts, know for sure that a lot of older ( 1990-2000) Patrols, Pajeros, Discovery and similar are brought by truckloads to Bosnia-Herzegovina and sold in pieces - engines, gearboxes, reducers and all other swap-able stuff from RHD to LHD.
Some are converted - I’ve seen pictures of this and it’s amazing the amount of work they do. Some are sold as RHD as many people don’t care that much provided they’re getting a decent deal, others are of course broken for spares.

Not even nearly.

It would, however, feel more love on the interesting 5-10 thread, I'm sure.

Love that.

A friend of the family ran one alongside a Renault 25 V6 Executive, the first barge I had the pleasure of riding in. To an eleven year old more accustomed to the gruffness of the family Capri 2.8i, it felt like some kind of spaceship.

One classic barge I’d like to own, although now probably extinct.

The 25 was an odd beast. The interior was a remarkable piece of 80s home design, in its full leather / velour top spec incarnation, and it was quiet and economical with what at the time seemed like an amazining hifi system (but would probably seem quite average these days). I always thought the ride was disappointingly pattery, a Renault should ride as quietly and absorbently as a big Pug or Cit. Felt like the dampers were too cheap.

That 5 Monaco is something I would be very happy to own and would enjoy driving. It's not remotely a barge of any kind but it's a fun little curio.

LOT of love for that. I don't even think it's particularly expensive.

Use it sparingly for 10 years, and then either throw it away or sell it for £10k, and either way you're a winner.

Do it. Be a winner.

Don't hit a small dog in it. You will die a horrible, horrible death, and you may irk the small dog.

They had a Renault 5 Monaco as shed of the week back in Dec 2014. That example had a similar mileage and "NO advisories on the MOT's for the last 9 years" and was up for £750!

Has the value of these really gone up by 600% in 3 years?!

Very fond memories of childhood holidays loping round France in a high-spec Renault 25. Great back seat.

I'd very much like one today. Not that I get any back seat time any more.

Not even remotely. Quilted leather, gold paint and an exotic name doth not a barge make.

But, is it wantable? fk yes. What a hoot that would be.

My very first car was a Renault 5 with the dash-mounted gearchange; a rather more humble version than this one, but first cars are always special.

Its a slightly posher Renault 5, it had leather seats and electric windows, tats about the limit of poshness as 80s posh is sub poverty level nowadays, we had a 1.7 GTX and it was ok, fairly swift for what it was, a boy racers favourite as it was a few mods away from a GT Turbo lookalike and was the most power to lowest insurance group at the time.

I just cant get to £4500 for one, my 2008 CLS went for not much more, and that is a proper barge, sticking some beige moo in a french biscuit tin does not a barge make !

Aaah, but! Nobody but nobody will be pleased to see you when you arrive in a 2008 CLS.

(not you, per se, anybody really)

Whereas if you gently crunch the gravel in that, and your luggage is a wicker hamper, you'll be snapping boho knicker elastic before you can get to reception. You'll have them eating out of your main.

See? Cheap.

I think the boho knicker elastic comment is likely to be correct. Would certainly make for some interesting back seat contortions

Its a fairly obscure and contrived scenario that involves an event at a country pile where there are attractive bohemian women who know, or care what you drive, that know what a Renault 5 is, which would make them either car geeks or over 40, most would think you are driving your nans car.

Somewhat takes the delusion romance out of wafting about and being all interesting in these old, crusty, squishy cars we all covet.

But probably true.

Do any cars costing less than a decent semi-detached do any knicker-snapping these days?

Mais non, monsieur.

They don't have to know anything about cars at all. With a single glance, any boho megababe, whether at a country pile or at Aldi, will intuit (wrongly, but that doesn't matter yet) that you are an educated, travelled raconteur. A man of simple good taste, good jokes, and fine cooking.

Whereas with the silver middle-aged Mercedes we all drive, these wonderful ladies are only left to guess whether we are

Regional Manager - Sales
Regional Sales Manager
Sales Manager - Regional
Sales - Regional Manager
Manager; Sales - Regional
or
Manager - Regional Sales

Which is a short and boring game with a disappointing conclusion every time you play.

Whereas Johnny 5 - is ALIVE

Ye Gods! slightly more comments on lé car than I was expecting!

I personally don’t want it - as it’s a manual, it would have to be auto to have any charm for me.

That said, it’d be nice to let it see out it’s twilight years in Cyprus... idea Am giving serious thought to shipping out there permanently. Rust wouldn’t be an issue, and let’s face it, the weather is better. I think I’d take the 7 over, but the M6 would have to go - there’s really nowhere to use it (legally) over there. That, and import duties are somewhat punitive for high CO2 monsters - two of them might be too much.

Idle musing on a Monday morning when I really should be working a little harder... what was the topic again? laugh
