Was this launch at Daios Cove in Crete? Just arrived here and there's obviously a massive Porsche event going on here. Tough life being a journo. Smashing hotel.

So it's a jacked-up Panamera, basically.

Which tells me the Panamera is even better, dynamically.....so why do so many people buy Cayennes, than Panameras?

When I look at my Boxster 987.2 I think how pretty it is.

How could a company that makes cars that look as good as 911s and Boxsters produce something as ugly as this? If anything, even uglier than the previous model.

Because at times in your life you need greater practicality and crave a higher seating/driving position. Then life circumstances change.

My family car has range from a 5.0 V8 SUV to a Lotus Exige via small estates, big saloons, diesels and 500bhp petrol saloons.

Believe it to not, the Exige was better dynamically than the others....but would have been useless during the periods I didn't have it. My current car is smaller than my last car, which was smaller than the car it replaced.

It's not unusual to downsize as kids get older!

Because pretty isn't want an SUV needs to be but is pretty much the most important aspect of a two-seater open sports car.

I absolutely get that, except for the higher driving position bit: why is that ever needed (genuine question, cos I don't get the trade-off for dynamic compromise)?

I think far too many people over-look other options and sort of default to SUVs, now. The Panamera must be pretty much as practical as a Cayenne (off-roading aside, which is rare, let's face it), especially in Sport Turismo form.

Various reasons why it is needed....but more importantly, people want it. Want if for comfort. Want it for practicality. Want it for safety.

The Panamera is not as practical as a Cayenne. Nor is it intended to be.
