RE: Audi Q7 V12 TDI: PH Heroes
Discussion
I can't usually stand diesel engines in my road cars (fine for mega mile haulage but generally not nice to use in my opinion), nor do I like Q7s, but this gets a pass purely for being utterly ridiculous. Over-engined is clearly not a phrase VAG understands. 5.5 to 60 in a house. Jaysus.
I still like the idea of a sports car plus fast saloon plus pre-98 defender combo. Forced to have one high-rise 4x4 for all purposes, it would still likely be a FFRR. I don't get "sporty" utility vehicles. That's for Paris-Dakar surely?

I love my Q7 and there was not a single used V12 for sale in the UK when I bought mine as that’s what I actually wanted and set out to buy but after 6weeks searching and the impending failure of my A6 needs must and I went for the 4.2 V8 instead
I still love it now but have been tempted with replacing it with the V12 next year - although there is currently 1 on AT which could tempt me sooner

A used Q7 seems to offer all the running costs of a serious performance car, combined with none of the fun.
Here here. A serious luxury motor though, and much like the V10 TDi that graced the Touareg, a seriously cool bit of kit. Never mind the guys who say that diesel cars aren't luxurious by their nature, I used to peddle that line myself. The running costs though, fak me. I still look at the V10 Touareg but the Q7 is another step up again.

Kind of strange for people to be remarking on its "performance". 0-60 in 5.5 is nothing to get excited about. For something around £150k, I would expect a hell of a lot better than that.
For something nigh on three tonne dry, with the aerodynamics of a brick, give it a fking break. I bet the roll-on power is even more lurid. The engine clearly makes good performance but from the sounds of it, does it in a very drone like manner. Its almost like the appeal is its a V12 even though a petrol V12, V8 sounds like it would be way more fun. That leaves the performance I guess but going fast is only as fun as the experiance makes it, and diesels are hard renowned for being charasmatic engines. I've not driven one but it sounds like all go an no show on the engine front.
That period 10-15 years ago where VAG were releasing interesting powerplants like this, the V10 diesel, V10, W12 and W8 petrol engines, narrow angle VR6s , and then putting them in wildly inappropriate cars seems almost impossible to believe happened now.
As much as this was seemingly driven by the hubris of one man, it's hard for an enthusiast not to be sad that time has passed now that the answer to almost every "what powerplant" question at every single manufacturer seems to be a 2 litre four pot burning your choice of diesel or petrol, with a market appropriate map applied. I doubt very much if anyone will ever put a V12 diesel engine in a road car ever again

Driving up the autobahn with the family snoozing and our Q7 loaded to the gunnels with Christmas presents and skiing kit we were overtaken by a Bentayga last year. I put my foot down to accelerate from about 100mph to 110/115 to keep up and have a look at the Bentayga and our Q7 with the normal 3.0 TDI was a bit lacking in sufficient torque to accelerate briskly over 100mph. That is the only time I can think of in two years ownership when I wanted more grunt. Even if I won the lottery I don't think I would be willing to have paid the thick end of £100k to address that problem...
I really disliked the Q7 before I bowed to wifely pressure but since I've got used to it I'm really happy with it as a family bus. I can't think of anything to replace it with that doesn't cost a shed load more cash. It's main drawback is it's too wide round surburban areas but it is a very relaxing on long journeys, reasonable mpg and with the suspension in dynamic mode it handles twisty small roads pretty well. We compared it to newer iterations of X5 and ML and the Audi interior was just better and noticeably better quality leather. With a budget of £30-35k current Range Rover Sports were way out of budget and the Discovery 4's massive weight put me off.

A TONNE!
And why on earth put up with the aerodynamics of a brick? That's just stupid.

So, what will it chip to?
flash mapping will see 560bhp and 840 lbs/ft of torque,stage 2 from the likes of B & B is 600 bhp and 930 lbs/ft of torque.
utterly bonkers things thing is the facelift model is 5.2 seconds to 60 and it will happily tow 3 tons, I would wage it will still most things off the line and certainly from a rolling start whilst towing said 3 tons
