for those that wernt there at the time, the mk2 rs2000 was the most affordable, fastest, best handling cross country car available.
nothing could look at them, proper drivers car and when a few mods were thrown in up a league again, the modern versions in the right hands will embarrass most supercars
I was there and my experience of owning several of both is a 3.0 S Capri was a match for an RS2000.nothing could look at them, proper drivers car and when a few mods were thrown in up a league again, the modern versions in the right hands will embarrass most supercars
My first car was a 79 RS2 Custom, this was in 1980, learntvto drive in it and took my test in it, used it to go to school too. They were cool times, especially since the Professionals has one.
I can tell you, they were the Daddy, the car to be seen in BUT they weren’t fast really.
I remember looking in my mirror one day and seeing a Colt Lancer, I read “2000 Turbo” on its spoiler and thought ok, let’s dispense with this tool. Gave it large and this thing went past me like I was literally standing still. I could not believe it.

I remember seeing this RS2 at an RSOC National Day back in the late 80's or very early 90's, think it had 800 or so miles on it then. Just find it a real shame it has been sat for nearly 30 years more or less unused, guess it'll spend the next 30 doing exactly the same.
Although my mates and I (we had 4 Mk2's and 1 Mk1 between us) all thought the RS2000 was "the business" back then they were really starting to show their age even by the late 80's, mine had some pretty good mods but still would be left by the 205GTi's etc in the right hands. The post about the Lancer Turbo is interesting as had another mate who had a couple of those, completely different league to the RS!!
Don't get me wrong I'd love another Mk 2 RS 2000 Custom but even with rose tinted glasses on I know they would feel plain slow and while a nice early Sunday morning toy to get "a little bit sideways" they are to be honest just another classic car. Here's hoping for a major price readjustment of the Mk2's to circa £5K so I can see if my opinion is wrong....

Would have loved a Lancer Turbo - very quick in their day but were rare even back then. We knew a girl who had one - even the old E21 323i was embarrassed by the Lancer performance and a standard RS2000 was no matchI can tell you, they were the Daddy, the car to be seen in BUT they weren’t fast really.

Having said all that, an RS2000 wasn't THAT slow in the early 80s for the money. Put in perspective, this week's SOTW Proton Gti from 20 years later with 133bhp is slower in a straight line to 100 according to timed road tests
Both, as standard, would feel slow to most now ....but then again, there seem to be lots on here enjoying slow, fun cars
This one in the article is headed for a garage existence though
15k will buy one to do what E30M3Mark suggests though - less if you don't want the droopsnoot nose - would have liked that redtop engine in mine - I had a 2.1 on twin IDFs - only about 145bhp - enough to be fun

modern versions are ones with an engine change and tyres /suspension to match,300/500hp in a 960kg rwd chassis whats not to like
Trying to put that power down with 2wd, and I'm guessing the stability if you tried to do 150. And it's basically a mongrel.Edited by blade7 on Monday 20th November 14:01

I know which one I'd rather do a long journey, commute, day to day stuff in. Edited by blade7 on Monday 20th November 14:01

That RS2000 is an early one, not a T-reg - they had a Ford Oval on the boot by S reg not the lettering
Originally registered as PNO 672RChanged to PNO 641T (to appear as a younger car, no doubt...)
I think PNO plates were part of the Ford press fleet (could be wrong on that.....)

Not sure Mumsnet has threads discussing the merits of the RS2000
