Tesla Roadster: 'Quickest car in the world'

With considerable flourish, Elon Musk reveals the all-new Roadster. A gone-to-plaid fast, four seat EV

In automotive circles, Tesla is often compared to Apple in its ability to transcend the usual press coverage given to cars. Certainly the mainstream media was on hand to greet the firm's all-new electric truck - and in return, Elon Musk supplied them a surprise worthy of Steve Jobs himself.

Completely unheralded in the build-up - and driven from the back of one of the Semi Trucks - was the next generation Roadster, a persuasively sleek four-seat EV that Tesla is already modestly describing as the 'quickest car in the world'. And while there are no specific output figures yet, the firm's quoted performance stats does rather take the breath away.

According to Tesla, the new model will crack 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds - and top 250mph flat out. By 4.2 seconds - the kind of time a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S takes to hit 60mph - the Roadster will be doing 100mph; nearly a second quicker than it took the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport when Autocar strapped a V-Box to it in 2011. The quoted standing quarter mile time is 8.8 seconds.

So it's fast then. But it promises to be whatever the electric car equivalent of frugal is, too. Tesla claims a range of 620 miles for the car - which is fairly staggering when you think that the EPA rates the Model P100D at about half that level. A 200kWh battery pack explains that, although it does make you wonder how much the all-wheel-drive Roadster weighs - especially as there's also a trick glass roof to stow away in the boot.

We'd expect it to be hefty; an adjective which naturally extends to the car's price tag. The base model will cost $200,000 - a launch edition 'Founder's Series', limited to 1000 examples - will be $250,000. It's $50,000 just to reserve one, and despite the much-publicized problems with the Model 3, expect buyers to be queuing up to do just that.

Sack the subbie:

"and driven from the back of one of the Semi Truck's"

Needless apostrophe is needless.

not withstanding the price and his actual ability to make it - I agree. Helluva thing and it makes the other manufacturers look behind the curve again...

I imagine there will be quite a lot of comment to follow!

Looks nice though...

A 250mph, electric sportscar. I can hear the lentil-eaters heads exploding.

So fewer door and people carrying capacity makes room for more batteries. The low tech hidden by the Mericans headline grabbing USP, 0-60mph time. More batteries = lower 0-60mph time.
Better stock up on tyres and wheel bearings.

When you look at it in detail it is also dull looking. Design by numbers.

I always thought that modern EV drivetrains would eventually make car performance numbers irrelevant because they can move the goalposts so far out that the performance "bottleneck" moves to the tyres, driver or something else. This feels like the beginning of that.

People need to take everything he says with a pinch of salt.

Dull? It's a lovely looking thing, and the performance is incredible, if real. The claimed range definately seems to be too good to be true, but even so this is still a very desirable sounding car even to an ICE loving dinosaur like me.

If this where any other car/brand i would be totally engrossed by this.

But there is just something about Tesla/Musk that just really grates and makes me dislike their products. I think it is mostly their we are better than everyone else attitude and marketing that winds me up the most.

Game changer and incredible value.

If he even gets a prototype up and running, matching his claims, the supercar world will st themselves.

Yup, derivative styling and overpriced. I don't think the makers of real cars have anything to worry about from this one.

What a fantastic thing. It would make everything you drove afterwards feel gutless though.

Too fast? 99% of drivers will be incapable of handling that power, not to mention that UK roads are just too crowded.
