I don't think I've ever paid or collected my food at a drive through without taking the car out of gear and pulling the handbrake. Sounds dull, but I can't see why anyone wouldn't do that.

I think the simple conclusion is that the law is lagging a long way behind technology, and in particular how technology interacts with society. And those making the law are often out-of-touch with current tech, let alone bleeding-edge stuff.

The law is subjective, if a policeman decides you've done something illegal it is very difficult to argue otherwise in a court. Judges will invariably believe the policeman, at least in my experience.

The private land/drive-thru thing is interesting because I spotted cars in a private shopping centre car park that had been clamped for non-payment of roadtax. They were CLEARLY on private land (signs everything telling you this - 3 hour limit etc.) and yet they were clamped (and so would be getting parking fines as well as the car tax one!)
Were they helicoptered in? If not, by extension, they must have driven there so would have committed an offence. Unless it was just after midnight on the first of a new month?

If you're stupid enough to drive without tax (or insurance, for that matter) you must be prepared to face the consequences, surely?

The council car parks in Exeter used to display a notice saying that anyone parking without a valid tax disc would be given a penalty notice, but this was withdrawn when somebody challenged them and the council ended up with egg on its face and having to cough up.

So am I allowed to drink a bottle of beer on my commute home or not?
