RE: Aston Martin Vantage: Lift off
Discussion
Transport the GTE grill (it doesn't appear to have the sticky out lippy thing) on to the road car... job done.... Visually it needed to be very different to the old Vantage yet still recognisable... styling cues.... As others have said, the '05 car is a hard act to follow, one of the prettiest cars ever made, keeping all the AM values in place.....
I think they've done a good job, although I still find the door/sill thing odd, looks like it's been jacked up in the wrong place and has bent the car in the middle... I did the configurator thing yesterday and it looked stunning... for me, with the front grill fixed (see above) and in the right colour it's a complete winner.... just need to get my hands on one and give it a good ragging (private road or on track of course)....
Oh, and I see prices of early V8V's have started to soar.....

Ok the new Vantage looks slick, however, that front! Looks like something is missing. Gaping. I can see the Vulcan influence, but the front is a disappointment to me as Astons have always had beautiful styling. Plus the headlamps look too small. Inside, the centre console looks very similar to that of the AMG GT. Need to see the actual car however the model it replaces looks far prettier - certainly from the front! I hope they haven't made a big mistake with the styling.
I've fixed the problem .
After spending a few hours looking at the high res press images and dissecting the design, I think fundamentally the car is very nice. I don't mind the back of the car at all and overall the shape is clean, taught and modern. But I just can't get past the headlamp design and the mesh grill. Mesh always looks cheap and the grill surround is just too pronounced for my liking. I think if they could have evolved the shape of the headlamps from the old Vantage and dumbed down the mesh grill or re-imagined the old cars grill strakes then I'd honestly be placing a deposit.

The first year of production has now sold out. It seems the predictions of Aston Martin's demise are premature.
Did anyone expect otherwise? Seem to be in rude health now by their standards...
Manufacturers have a difficult time... Merc, BMW, Audi, Jag, Porsche... They unveil a new model and oh no, it looks like the last model, they all look the same. Then they have a design shift. Oh no, that's awful, doesn't look like a Jag/Merc or whatever... They've deserted their heritage. It will never sell.
For what, years PHers have been saying Astons all look the same, DB11 comes out looks different and Aston have blown it. Now the Vantage is out and oh dear, it's the beginning of the end. They won't sell but... The first year of production has now sold out!!!
Brits don't like change. PHers think they do but they don't. Change has to be forced on most people. Some sales will be lost, some potential customers will take their ball and go elsewhere. New customers will be attracted too. A few may think they know better but Aston have clearly proved them wrong.

I don't think any marque at this level proves anyone wrong. For what, years PHers have been saying Astons all look the same, DB11 comes out looks different and Aston have blown it. Someone who wants a brand new Aston, is going to buy a brand new Aston....
But yes they do have a hard time..
For me if you hit a sweet spot you should/could stick with it ...and in the case of the DB9 aesthetic stick with for longer

I want to like it, but I can't.
One of the things I loved about the original V8V was the simple classic good looks of it, particularly pre-2010 before they started adding strange side skirts.
I think AM should stick to the style and offerings of what it is known for, the (and I use this term in context of AM) normal models have always been drop dead gorgeous inside and out in a luxurious refined classical way but with a generous dollop of sporty ability unlike Bentley or RR, but if you want vents, diffusers, carbon fibre etc you opt for a lairy model, like a DBS.
If the bog standard (again, context) models look as fussy as this I think AM has forgotten itself, I realise as times change not everything can be kept (manual gearboxes, NA engines etc) but that simple, restrained yet beautiful styling was what made it AM for me and this just becomes another over winged and vented monstrosity that we already have too many of.
Bottom line, AMs should be beautiful, not festooned with childish trinkets.

The problem for Aston is that for the last few years, many have been saying the current V8V was old and dated and now the new one is here, many are saying it's too modern and they like the older car better! It's always really difficult to come up with a replacement for a design that's been around as long as the old car and that was so right from the start. Aston are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
