Close between the S2000 and MX5 but I think that the MX5 has it.

Oh dear! This looks like the beginning of the end for Aston Martin - they've missed their chance to nail this one. The AMG GT is a much more elegant and well resolved package; I'd say Mercedes is now going to dominate high end sports cars in the same way that it dominates racing. They really should have gone out on more of a limb with the styling if they wanted to head down this kind of direction - perhaps something similar (identical) to the DB10.
Personally I don't like the AMG GT's rear. And in fairness, how many do you see compared to 911s? Not sure how Mercedes is 'dominating'.

I look forward to seeing the Aston in the flesh - I'll reserve judgement. Certainly very modern looking and clearly inspired by the Vulcan.

Initially I wasn't so sure.. On repeat viewing it's growing, in fact I actually really like it.

The original vantage was always going to be a tough act to follow.. If Aston had came out with the similar design they'd have been slated for not being original enough. I think this looks different enough to not be classed as an evolution, but still similar enough to look like the rest of the range (DB11).

You know in cartoons when the jaw would fall off a skull, leaving it sitting there looking ridiculous...

I can't help feeling that the front-end looks like He-Man has punched Skeletor's jaw off.

Saw the car 'live' already 2 months ago, and seeing the pictures again , I have the same doubts about the front and rear spoilers...
Can someone photoshop it to take off the front and rear add ons and then let's see what it looks like. More classy would be my assumption.

Cheers,
F

I haven't had that 'i've got to get one of those somehow' feelings about a new car for years.
But i'm afraid if I see a black one of these in the flesh it might start off a chain of events that I really could do without. hehe

I only watched Spectre again the other night and was hoping the new Vantage would follow the DB10...but maybe change the mouth/face aspect
And in reality, for me, my worry was right....

I love the stance, the general body proportions, the tiny, tiny overhangs
I like an aggressive and functional rear diffuser
Slim aggressive lights and shallow DLO

I don't like stick on touch screens
wheels that are too big for the wheelbase
Any design that's colour sensitive
And especially in this case, taking an iconic grille shape and moving it down so that in effect it gets lost in the shadows. The face now resembles many other cars that sport aftermarket front bumpers with 'race-car' grilles.
Rolls Royce, Bentley, Mercedes, ....damn near any other marque whose image is based upon a recognisable grille don't and wouldn't shove their mouth down there... looks crap. Any angle that involves the front looks naff IMO....get rid of that front and start to look at it from a profile or anything that involves the rear and now we're talking...

Race car though, looks like a kit car.

All that said... bravery was needed to move on from the grace and pure brilliance of what went before. But this seems to me to be too 'try-hard.
oh and accepting it s a brilliant power plant and drivetrain.... it's not Aston's brilliant power plant... character - lost.

This makes the previous vantage look even better to my eyes than before - better try to snap one up before they head up towards 100k. They had a purity and masculinity which is lacking in this fussy and confused design. Still, I suppose this isn't a catastrophe of Cygnet proportions..
'The beginning of the end for Aston'... lol, you need to read up on their history if you think they're in any special kind of peril now. Based on the success of the new DB11, they're actually in a strong position financially (for once) and it's quite a bold move to engineer some real separation between their 'GT' car (the DB11), and their sports car (the Vantage). For years their line up has been full of cars which have a different badge but that all look the same and deliver a very similar experience. The Vantage was just a shorter DB9, now it's much more of a distinctive model.

Oh and if you think the AMG GT is elegant, just take another look that one of those, is the front of the AMG GT really any better than the new Vantage?

As for the previous Vantage, yes they're pretty but they are old, very old now and I hope the new one is better engineered as the one I had was quite uninspiring.

Lots of similarities.... But you certainly cant knock the new Vantage's visage based on the design and beauty of that Teutonic uber snout! I think they could both do with a little rhinoplasty. The Vantage is stunning from this angle though:

"Marek Reichman, the firm's Chief Creative Officer, told PH its replacement had to be, "simple, but incredibly dramatic." And whether you like it or not, the amalgamation of Vulcan and DB10 is undeniably striking."

Which all sounds very confident, but surely the point is that if people don't like it, they're going to be a lot less likely to buy the thing aren't they?

Is it just me thats baffled by the fact clicking on an image opens a new page? Why isn't there a picture viewer on a site thats arguably at least 50% about the pictures?

agreed!...Aston had an open goal when it comes to front end design....
fluffed it IMO.

Well i still like it.

They needed to do something different or else people would just say 'Aston churning out the same designs again etc etc etc'

I think it's stunning!

Yes the front grille is huuuuuuuuge but it's supposed to be! Yes the details are like heavy handed....but they are supposed to be!

Personally i think it looks great from all angles!

It's more of a success than th DB11 IMO which can look like it's on stilts!

This is my instinct too but must wait for Bristol on Thursday and view it from my 6 foot not the 2 foot 'up the nose' camera angle. And please Bristol put a NUMBER PLATE on it to mute the mouth a bit and hide the mesh killing mounting brackets etc

I really do see the design challenge and the need for a smaller, lighter, harder car rather than be accused of a 20% smaller DB11 clone. People like 'race' derived styling cues on sportscars and its very much the trend. I don't know why what I love on the Vulcan isn't 100% translating here - is it a nose cone thing?

Vulcan has the trad Aston 'to the front' bonnet and no nose cone... Thursday...

Overall a great car from most angles but from the moment I saw it i thought that "overbite" is horrible. Looks like the front should be in the Simpsons

Yes of course following any success is difficult
This, however, is trying very much too hard
Look at the new Bentley. Still recognisably Bentley but just a bit better in every way. Interior just as gorgeous but even more surprise and delight moments. Exterior slimmed down, muscled up but now more attractive.
VW seemed to understand the brand and its customers much better than Aston have.
Final note. The sticky out nose is just grotesque and unforgivable. When the teaser renders were put together weeks ago I think everyone though 'ok, but surely that nose and tail can't protrude like that'. I simply cannot believe they have done it and don't understand at all what they were getting at

Bloody moaners, its looks very much like an Aston but with added wow factor. Almost any car can be compared to a similar model from another manufacturer. I agree the centre console looks a little AMG but so what, its not from one of those. This a great and bold move forward for AM. Keep it coming!
