It's not just the sound of V8, V12 etc it's the actual vibration. Especially when driving it's all part of the feedback that makes you one with the car and driving experience. I imagine tearing around in an EV is not as visceral. Because I'm a big kid I've fitted an electronic cut valve to the exhaust on my V8 and when open the experience is far more fun and connected.

exactly...

my M5 growls and there is something visceral about it - not even particularly loud, certainly doesn't pop and fart - but it feels alive...
My RR v8 is noisier and even more elemental
My z3 straight 6 howls at you

all play on your emotions and engage you - a CD playing behind my ear / through a pipe is not going to quite work the same way

Jenson is absolutely right, F1 really did die at the Melbourne GP 2014. I've been to 6 or 7 races since the switch to turbo hybrid, but at Monaco this year I said that's it - I've now given up. Such a shame, I'm genuinely sad I won't ever again feel, smell, hear what F1 was before 2014. NA V8s or V10s revving to 23,000.

On the day earlier this year that the UK government announced that no more petrol cars will be sold in the UK by 2040, I bought a car with a NA 6 litre V12 in the engine bay.

Cars for those people on here that like cars really are getting worse and worse...

This for me is the reason I'm looking forward to decent performance EVs. The internal combustion engines in most mainstream modern "performance" cars are mostly entirely joyless things anyway; at least with an electric drivetrain we might get our throttle response back.

I'll probably always have a naturally aspirated, cable throttled petrol engine in the garage but getting rid of the big lump of turbo lag under the bonnet of our family car will not be a loss.

What's wrong with something being quietly efficient?
In a toy like any fast road car? Everything.

It's fine for an everyday shopping car - it's desirable even. But for a sports car the inefficiency of a petrol engine, and all the smells and sounds and vibrations that brings, is half the point. Speed is boring. You get used to it. The sensation of speed is everything, and if you don't feel like you're going quickly, what's the point in it being a road car.

If you buy cars for dick waving then sure, electric will be great, but for everything else it will always be a downgrade.

Valid article.
Noise of an engine is so much of the whole driving experience - that's why I own so many V8's.
Not sure a lot can be done with the EV's - although some enhancement of the Jet-like whistle of the Formula -E cars might be quite cool.
Disagree - pointless article.

If we're so bothered about noise, why do we insist on buying cars with in-car entertainment? Granted not everyone will take such an extreme view as me, and I do love a good V8 (or V6, V12, I5 etc), but even PH spends as much of its time commenting on the quality of ICE and Infotainment systems in new car reviews as it does on performance, handling etc.

Which would you rather have: the quickest, most-fun, best-handling silent car or the one that makes the best noise?
I agree and disagree in equal measure. Good ICE is great WHEN you want to listen to some tunes. But.......... I never listened to any tunes when I had my V8 wedges. V8 FOU has a point.

Take a trip to the Silverstone Classic in July. This year they had one of the later V10 Renault F1's doing a few laps. It was absolutely spine tingling - everyone around was just stood in awe smiling (I personally never experienced it before). There is also historic F1 racing ('70's onwards), touring cars (RS500's to B5 A4's and T5's), and more. Wall to wall symphony smile It is one of my favourite car events at the moment - just loads of car people. I usually think when there how refreshing it is compared to the oft depressing PH.

Exactly - now try and imagine 24 of those hurtling towards the same corner at full pelt! That's what I'm gutted about. Thanks for tip though - I'll check that out. I think it's things like that and FoS where we can get a tiny taste of the proper days of F1. Love or hate Bernie - at least he wanted rid of the current set up to go back to the V8 screamers.

That sounds immense. I'm going next year for sure and will take my 2 young nephews to instil it from a young age.

Absolutely this.

To my mind it's got all the variety and access of Goodwood FoS, with actual racing and the ability to spectate properly. Just lacks the rally stage and the big name (current) drivers.

The Tesla with the noise generator sounds like one of those nasty noise things you could get to plug into the cigarette lighter.

Where's the imagination, an electric car could sound like anything, personally I'd like one that sounded like a Tron Lightcycle or an X-Wing Fighter, that would be oddly cool.

I'm going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons and say that when I get an electric sports car, I want it to be damn near silent, that's part of the appeal. V8's are great at making noise and that is part of their appeal but they are completely different vehicles. I am especially looking forward to riding a silent sports bike, each to their own.

What kind of pathetic, desperate cretin would actually want this?
If you think that's bad, you should listen to this one (that YouTube helpfully progressed me to): https://youtu.be/F_BcodrgcX0

Apart from sounding horribly synthetic, that would drive me insane, just waiting the whole time for it to 'change gear'!

They announced nothing of the sort if you read the words carefully, they announced all cars to be hybrid or straight electric within 22 years. Quite some forward looking statement don't you think.

Why are those idiots at Toyota, Renault and Honda putting almost all their R&D money into EV then?

What do you know that they don't?
Thats a very good question to which right now I don't have the answer but its probably the same reason Easyjet announced it will be running Electric powered passenger airliners within 10 years.. They don't exist yet but don't let that get in the way of a good news story.
