I test drove both and put my money where my mouth is, RS6PE for me. They're both great cars and there's very little between them on the road, though I found the ride in the RS6 (on springs) to be slightly better than the Merc. In the end my decision was more subjective than anything else, I like the look and image of the RS6, it's a very handsome car in my eyes without being too shouty while the Merc is just a little too plain for a car costing @£100k.

Exactly!

In silver and debadged please

With a towbar - which may be a problem......

I went for Daytona and black pack with no badges. If you have the standard air suspension you can have a tow bar no problem and save a few quid over DRC.

Top tip on getting a tow bar, I had wondered smile
That towing a caterham to a track seems to be a fine idea for a day of fun.
Or is that just me?

"Which is best?"

Surely you mean "Which is better?".

If there were three cars on test, you could ask "Which is best?". However, there are only two.

Good. Better. Best.

FFS. It's not difficult. Either learn to write English or sack the sub-editor.
Well st in my mouth and call it a sundae - misuse of ellipsis as well.
"Place your bets..."
Sub-editors head on a plate please. If he's still purveying his brand of illiteracy at Haymarket that is.

Do we add a full stop after an ellipsis at the end of a sentence?

Matt, you're at it again. If you're comparing 2 cars it's " which is better" not "best". If grammar isn't important you shouldn't be a journalist.

Got to love PH. Read a story about 2 of the fastest estate cars available, and all people comment on is grammar and the fact it would be better as a 2L diesel. I'm sure half the people on here are on the wrong website.

I for one think both are great - I currently have a 2013 535d touring - from new only done 25k - should have bought a petrol!!! would love an e63s in about a year I think (IE 1 one year old s/h) if year old prices of the previous gen e63s are anything to go by.

I’m currently in a 2014 E63s estate. Roll on 2019 / 2020 when I will pick up one of these!

I don't see the point in either. But I'm really glad they both exist cool
Conversely I don’t think many cars make more sense than a fast wagon. Love ‘em.

And the Merc for me please!
Here here! biggrin

I think the Audi looks so much more aggressive, purposeful and brutal from the outside. That could be either an advantage or disadvantage, depending on how discreet or not you want your fast estate to be. However, the Mercedes has that fantastic engine that you cannot ignore and sounds utterly glorious.

I reckon the E63 edges it for me, too.

It's all the typical supercar comments that you'd usually get, that are now even being applied to quick estate cars:

"what's the point in having all that power?", "where are you supposed to use it all?", "why didn't you just get a diesel?", "i don't really see the point?", etc.

It's either the wrong site or the correct site, depending on how you view of the place. I expect nothing less now;' It's no longer a site for enthusiasts anymore.

I own a RS6 PE and am very happy with it - I've done 30,000 miles in 18 months and I am not bored of it yet!

I would expect the Merecedes to come out the victor given the RS6 was launched in 2013, based upon the C7 A6 that came out 2 years previous to that. The game moves on quickly...

For me, looks are important, and no one does a performance wagon like Audi. The Mercedes does nothing for me in that department, and I've always felt their interiors are quite cheap too. The new A6 will out soon, and then Audi have had ample opportunity to review the competition and come up with an answer for the new 4WD high performance Mercs and BMWs. I look forward to the response!

Some find it difficult to be happy for others. Let's face it, most if not all of those comments are from people who simply cannot afford either car. It makes them feel better about themselves if they can disregard it as 'pointless' or the often used "more money than sense" response.

It's as much a societal problem than it is individual.

You should test the new Alpina B5 touring against these. It’s the only v8 in the new 5 series, and the only performance touring. 608bhp. 0-62 in 3.5 205mph £89k before options.

Erm, I think you'll find the M5 is also a V8.
