As an owner of a CLS55 AMG, I can see the lines from the A-Pillar back look almost identical to the original generation. Looks great IMO
My thoughts exactly, also had a first gen one and this captures some of what I liked about that, the rear lights have a hint of the current C Class coupes rear lights which I think look great, front is less successful, it looks a bit BMW in side profile to me, but then the first gens front was its least successful angle.

Would like to see this in a normal paint type, I dont mind the matte paint but its a bit overdone, and I think it robs some of the subtle nuances of the styling as the reflections dont work in the same way.

Definitely an improvement on the second gen, which was not unpleasant but wasnt that cohesive, this gets back to a modernised version of the original, strangely similar to how the Audi TT has gone, the Capri did this as well, lovely original, difficult second album type MK2 and then a decent third incarnation, maybe a pattern there ?

I just find the CLS so frustrating and pointless. Mainly as roofline is so low I can't sit into the back seat.
Why buy a car this large, and with all the compromises that go with it when it's hopeless for an adult in the back? Well OK a 6'+ person anyway.
How many people buy a car to carry 4 adults? It used to be that the CLS was pretty and different enough that it was desirable even with lower levels of practicality, but I can't see why you'd choose this over an E-Class anymore, I'd even say that an E-Class in 'AMG' guise looks nicer than the CLS.

looks too much like a BMW, especially if viewed from the side.

I've got a 2nd gen CLS, and the rear seats seem to be ok for a couple of 6 footers. Sure they have to bend their necks ever so slightly, but it's not the end of the world.

The interior was its biggest weakness I thought; dated dash and console, infuriating menu and interface and cheap feeling plastics. Hopefully they've sorted that out with the new one.

The Mercedes CLS has always felt that it was a product of a bit of a fling. Mummy was a CL, Daddy was an E Class. But Mummy’s style and class managed to come through in DNA of the offspring.

But the CL has been replaced by S Coupe (or carbrio). Mummy is, at the risk of dashing all hopes of a knighthood, a bit Meghan. And Daddy’s not the E Class businessman but a taxi driver. It’s all gone a bit Lewis.

I’m sure that young boys under the age of thirteen, or Americans of any age, will seep a little when they experience the interior. After dark it will be full on nocturnal emissions. But to the more cultured the inside is, quite frankly, a tart’s boudoir.

Lighting technology and interior displays, whilst providing opportunity for imagination, do seem to be causing many car designers to struggle. For Mercedes design teams in particular, creating something coherent is increasingly beyond them. Lights, like eyes, are a window into a the soul. This CLS is soulless. Mercedes interiors are an affront to the esthete.

I’ve been a loyal Mercedes customer for so, so many years and owned many models including W219 and W218. Despite their continued dumbing down of the brand, product and quality I wish them well. But I also wish they would look back into the past and understand what made a Mercedes a Mercedes and, in the case of the new CLS, get back to the stud farm with a better breeding programme.

Don't like it.

It looks like a floppy thing that someone picked up in the middle, leaving the front and back sloping downwards. Just like the CLA does, as others have commented. Really does not look appealing.

Big fan of these new Merc interiors though, they do look the business. Tempted by the new E coupé with this interior - a much sweeter-looking car on the outside.

Looks like M-B might finally have decided on what they are doing with their front lights.

So many years of pudgy, ill-conceived attempts at a 'face', this is much better.

People just don't go out these days "4 up"

Used to, business meetings that kind of thing but not now.

That's one of the reasons the number of cars on our roads has grown. Back in the day Mum and Dad had a car, now they have one each.

The CLS is about style, no one will buy one and complain about rear seat space, the seats will be sat in once a year if that.

A taxi firm will buy an E class.

Agree +1
I'd like to see stuff like this... When you compare the C, E & S coupes there is very little differentiation other than size... this CLS has echoes of those too

I like the fact they've gone back to straight sixes, and no mention of a godawful 4 cylinder... Although I suspect those will come later.

Well that's not a looker is it!

Not a massvie fan of them, but they have always had something about them.

As above, if you didn't know youd think this was a CLA repalcement
yes

What a disappointment.

The current CLS - especially the most recent facelift - is a great looking car. This is just a bit rubbish.

I think they've just absolutely ruined the CLS with that. It now just looks like a huge CLA. What happened to individual model styling?

Whoever styled this completely ballsed it up, in my eyes! It's a shame actually, because the interior looks fantastic, to me.

I think these are sold to people who sometimes put kids in the back / occasionally give a lift to adults.

I you need a Mercedes that can regularly carry adults in the back, by an S Class.

Yeah, rarely used the rear seats on mine, it's a coupe you can carry four in if you need to, it is about how it looks and that comprises the practicality, my main issue was sheer size and the fact it wasn't that easy to see the extremities, you very much sit in a CLS, rather than on like an SUV for example.

I'm on the fence regards that because I prefer a V6 layout to a straight six layout, no doubt that the straight six engines will be smoother though.

Matte paint.

WHY???
Why? Because it's not matte paint, it's a satin/frozen finish. It still reflects more light than matte but just not as much as a normal metallic paint would.

This is matte paint (and yes that's actual paint, not a wrap):-

Exterior looks ok, nothing more nothing less.

Interior looks awfully tacky with those screens and LED strips, as my colleague said looking over my shoulder 'that interior is fking gash!'
