The 2.5 flat four engine is around 3 kilos lighter than the previous NA flat six.
Cheers, not a huge difference then.

oh dear,

I'm going to be burned at the stake and have to hand in my PH card.

I test drove both a Cayman and Cayman S recently, the Cayman rode superbly, handled sweetly and felt like a decent sports car. Not quite enough oomph to generate excitement but im coming from a Z4MR. The S however had real shove. Not sure if the demonstrator had PASM but it didn't ride as well but certainly was exciting when you put the pedal down. Docile when not pressing on but rapid, planted and incredibly competent.

I was really impressed by it. The noise didn't tug the heart strings and I'm not sure i'll bother with the sports exhaust.

but I'm looking forward to ordering a 718 Cayman S when funds allow.

No flames from me absolutely lovely cars. I’m really surprised the engine is so devisive. Maybe I’m just a TOTAL petrolhead but I love them all and I can find reasons to extol the virtue of each of the different engine types. They all have their own character you’ve just got to learn to approach them appropriately.

When “car enthusiasts” walk around big turbo race cars they get all excited but as soon as someone mentions a turbo on a road car they pull their face. Each to their own obviously but the 718 seems to me a fabulous little car. It’s more like a 911 than a 911 in terms of size, at least!

I don't think the problem is the turbo - it's the soul. Because the 981 had an engine with such an X factor, the 718 was always going to have a hard act to follow. Sadly, the F4T just took some of the soul away.

I actually voted with my wallet. I paid the same for a used 981GTS than I was going to be paying for a new 718S. Such was the draw of the sound and character of the GTS's F6.

Having been to a few Porsche Club meets, I can tell you first hand that when a GTS fires up to leave, people smile and look. When a 718 does the same, it just doesn't stimulate the same 'petrolhead' appreciation.

It's a shame, because the 718 is a fantastic car. Just lost the X factor.

Agreed. Whilst I prefer the idea of the flat 6 as I stated earlier I know the 718 is a damn fine car. Good for you you can afford one. Enjoy.

It's the buyers of these four bangers I have the most respect for.

In the face of forums, the motoring press, tv reviewers all complaining about that engine and the greatness of its predecessor..... Still go out and by it! smile

Good for them.

The vast majority really couldn’t care less about the sound of an engine... any engine. People are buying M3/4’s in spite of its engine not sounding great and piped sound through speakers. Mclarens sell when there are NA R8 & Huracans available.
We’re in a time where a lot of buyers have only known turbo cars and the idea of working an engine, revving it out just seems like hard work. Low end turbo torque is an easy win, I get it. I’ve benefited from it in the past. I have a diesel Golf as a daily, all that easy power comes in useful on morning trudge but it’s just a means to an end for me.
I’ve had 2 718 loaners from Porsche and very nice they are too. The first was a manual, which I had for a day. The 2nd, a PDK, which I had for 2 days. For me, though still the best among its rivals, the 718 has lost some some character. Some soul. I’ll take my 981 CS out for a 30mile drive for reason other to enjoy it... the 718s just sat on the drive until I needed to actually go somewhere.
A friend has a 987 Box, he’s not knowledgeable nor a driving God. Just wanted a Porsche. He loves the look of the 718, couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel. A quick blast up the A12 and back and he didn’t like the F4T either.
Of course they’re are loads of people who love the 718, it’s F4T or in spite of it and that’s a great thing... if my neighbour bought one I’d certainly wouldn’t be telling them they’d bought the wrong car. If they asked my thoughts before buying I’d simply explain both sides, the pros & cons for both and then tell them to get tests drives and buy what suited them. After all as can be seen in any of these 718 F4T v 981 F6 threads, it’s a personal thing. No rights or wrongs, just personal choice.

If the 781's were priced differently, i.e. around £40K
They are
Indeed. Standard 718 C retails at £42k.
I have owned 1 Cayman (2.7), and 2 Boxsters (981 and 981S). The 981S was by far the best of the three - but all in, the price tag from Porsche was circa £50K. The spec was not excessive - pdk, grey paint, 20 wheels, park sensors front and rear and nav - see below for pic.

The equivalent 781S from the configurator today is £58K (see below):

If I was to buy another Boxster I would want to "up spec" the performance options - so the GTS would be my pick if - and that (in basic PDK form) is £64K.

I think £64K for a performance spec Boxster - that sounds ste - is just too much.

4cyl vs 6cyl?

Tbh I found the cacophony from the 6-cyl Boxster pretty underwhelming (even with Sports exhaust). Poise, balance and feel remain it’s strong merits..
Completely agree. I have a 987 Boxster S, and love the handling; but the engine note isn't that special.

Perhaps one of the marketing problems Porsche had with the Boxster / Cayman range, was its dynamic ability compared to their rear engine 911`s The inherited engine hanging out over the back wheels format, gave their engineers some handling headaches, which included fixes such as using heavy lead bars inside the front bumpers. Nevertheless Porsche engineers were able to develop the handling of the rear engine cars to a remarkable degree. Given their chance to develop the Boxster Cayman range as a clean sheet, ground up design it was hardly surprising that the Cayman Boxster range began to encroach on 911 ability and sales. They therefore seemed to want to put some daylight between the 911 and Boxster Cayman ranges by making then 4 pot cars.
Having driven both the 4 and 6 cylinder cars, I have to agree that the 2.7L 6 pot is not as immediate as the turbo 4, but think the 6 pot still makes the better sound IMHO.
As far as the overall package is concerned, the Cayman Boxster range was described by some motoring journalists as being all the sports car you will ever need, and having driven them I can kind of see where that comment came from.

Just picked my new Cayman GTS up today and I have to say even in this weather it’s a brilliant car, in regards to the noise, I can only say I was pleasently surprised, this car doesn’t sound the same as the previous however produces a different type of noise which is beautiful!
Not sure how to upload a video on here however if you view my instagram - ‘supercarharry’ I have uploaded a video on my profile, if anyone can upload it on here or tell me how to I’ll share it here, sounds brilliant.
An amazing car that I’m in love with 😍
