But it's a track car!!! McLaren make no excuses for the way it looks.

An interesting chat between 2 YouTubers and proper serious car guys about McLaren in general and why one has cancelled his order for the Senna. Not for the reasons most would think.

Beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder, so its a moot point to try and convince people to my opinion, but if it was to be designed as an out and out track car, why make it road legal, why not just buy one of their GT3 cars for the same price? Why compromise on its track capabilities so that you can drive it to and from the track - if you are worried about budgets of transporting your race car to the track, you probably aren't dropping £750,000 on a single car.

Me.. I like the technical aspect, I like that McLaren go about things a different way. Their way. A lot of folk on here don't rate McLaren at all, ask who will them. They won't sell when you can have Ferrari. But they do sell. The Senna is not for everyone. No, it's not pretty etc but it will appeal to a certain section.

No higher compliment than choosing the one shade to hide every visual nuance and cover the whole thing in it....right down to euro-taxi wheels....
Yep, that'd be my choice too.

Proportions/locations of the wheels vs the bodywork still look like some dodgy DIY replica even when it's black on black on black.

My wife saw one yesterday in the flesh. She said it was absolutely stunning when you're standing next to it.

Senna is rolling in his grave at 12000rpm.

What’s all the hate about. I don’t get it. It looks like it does because it meets a mandate. And it’s hardly ugly

Fundamentally it's because there is a shape of mid engine car that looks "correct" It's relatively uniform across all brands. The ratio between front "bonnet" the passenger compartment, and the rear 3/4

Qucik Google gives this
http://www.bksketch.com/proportions-in-drawing-and...

McLaren putting the spoiler in that position exaggerates the excessively long rear haunches. The nose overhang is too long so the car looks "unbalanced" The see through doors are a gimic (as is an overhead start button) The other issue that McLaren have is that they change their "design language" too often. If you didn't know would you say the same manufacturer made the 12c, 720s and this?

As for "mandate" think about what they are doing here. Making a ltd edition fast road car. To say "race car for the road" is such a nonsense statement. A REAL race car is completely useless on the road. All the things that make a race car great. Downforce, stiff suspension and roll bars. Brakes that work to silly temperatures. All those things are a pita on a road car, if not make it worse than a normal car! So you HAVE to put in compromise in making a road car. So instantly it's not a RCFTR it reverts to fast road car. Gordon Murray famously said when designing the F1. It's a road car! Not a race car!

Then there's the name. Unless I'm mistaken I don't recall seeing the Senna double S on any McLaren F1 cars. (unlike Wiliams who have had it on every car since 1995 - With the consent of the family and foundation)

It's a marketing exercise and not befitting on the mans legacy. The P1 would have been a better use of the guys name if McLaren felt they HAD to use it on a hypercar

There seems to be so much overthinking going here. Mclaren have built a car with controversial looks. Most here don’t like it and question what it’s for... it’s sold out. It’s for those people, for whatever they want it for. Some will store it, flip it. Some will just have it in their collection, the other cars, Ferraris, Paganis, Bugattis and Porsche’s they don’t drive. Others will enjoy their Mclaren track days and enjoy the car. Simple really.
