If it's lighter, has steering feel and remains RWD and manual it would be great.

But a billion hp, a million mpg, AWD, farty exhausts, automatic and Facebook integration are what the market will no doubt demand....

I'd rather it was slower, but more lively and fun. But I'm not going to buy one anyway, so who cares what I think?

M3 fanboy here having owned a few.

It would take a lot for me to move to another brand. Such complete cars in every way.

I don't give a st about how fast it goes in a straight line.
I'm the same I've had 4 M3s and would find it difficult to move to another brand like AMG or RS.

Hopefully BMW sort the traction issue from the start on this generation; shouldn’t take 2 years to bring out the car it should have been....

Interesting that this is the M3, I may have made missed it but haven’t seen pictures of the 4 series replacement running round in camo.

I would be surprised if they didn’t go switchable 2/4wd a la M5 with 500bhp and think it would be great fun but wouldn’t be upset if they didn’t.

I’m glad to see the Alfa has given a genuine contender in the segment too, hopefully giving the status quo something to think about and means this new M3/4 will be better for it.

It's quite ridiculous to say it but 475HP puts it behind the Giulia and C63S of today's crop - in 3 years time that's going to be well out of date. I'd expect a tickled Giulia by then and also a tweak on the C Class which will go to 550PS + comfortably.

Admittedly I've not driven the current M3 but reviews say it struggles with traction. If I were BMW I'd take the weight penalty of the M5's 4WD system and go to 520PS which should have it keeping up with the other 2 without treading on the M5s toes.
Because a car that can already hit 60 in 4 seconds and 100 in 8.6 seconds needs more power? It's more than fast enough.

If it wants to win favour with the people that buy it then it does yeah.

Cars like this are all willy waving. Barely any people actually buy them that give a st how it drivers, most want it for the badge and how fast it is to impress their mates/missus/random birds they meet

There isn't a modern turbo powerful RWD front engined car that doesn't have traction issues if you use the throttle like a switch, QV/C63 and M3 will all bonfire their tyres in 1st/2nd if you want them too.

But to many that's part of the fun and these cars are about fun, well they are to me.

Not really I'm on my 4th so I'm one of those people you so charmingly describe and I get them for me and I love them, no one I know/care about is impressed in the slightest and they don't need to be.

The M range's best days are obviously behind it. BMW are falling further and further behind Merc, Audi, Alfa and Porsche.

I didn't realise Porsche had a small sports saloon.

Not sure the F80’s “spikiness” is about its turbo delivery, more the deployment. Compared to an old Rosche-era M-car it feels like it has about two inches of accelerator travel. Not sure how any driver manages that much torque with such little room.

I recently sold my F80 M3 Competition Pack after 10 months for a whole host of drivability issues including:

- rubbish traction even on a hot summer day
- overly firm suspension even in comfort for a lot of the regular daily driving I do
- lack of steering feel
- DCT gearbox not smooth around town
- overly aggressive throttle map in sport setting making it difficult to pull off without looking like you can't drive
- engine noise did nothing for me

I could list more..... BMW lost their way with this car and made it too track focussed for realistic driving conditions. Despite this the Civic Type R is faster around the Nurburgring than the F80, imagine that?!?!

BMW need to make a lighter more compliant tactile car that appeals to the heart not to pub bragging rights to get me back into a M

Yeah, that this you speak of is rather rapid! I still see the e46 as a modern car. But one that I'd have in a heartbeat if set up like that!

I've had and currently own 17 plate cars even BMW's but they are all pretty much just obese at shaped objects. iPads on wheels. bks to coin a phrase. No point in them trying to re-create "steering feel" and synthesised noises, just own a car from the 70's that does all of that effortlessly and have a new car for business etc...

Why have one car that's a huge compromise, that costs a fortune, instead of having two, that cost less and aren't compromised in any way. One will probably make you money too...

I'll be keeping my '02 over this modern twaddle that's for sure!

They'd be better off just making bodykits for the old one and lying about the power figures - that's all the bores that buy these cars care about anyway.

If only they'd make it a bit smaller. It's no good being light and nimble if it has the dimensions of a barge.

Pity the engine is staying the same. It just doesn't sound right at all imo.

I wonder what about that someone is gonna complain about here? I still see the E46 M3 as a pretty new car. I remember seeing cool people in their late 20's driving either an E46 M3/330ci or an Audi TT 225 when I was little biggrin Seems odd that both of those are modern classics now.

I appreciate if you mash your foot in any 400+ bhp RWD car you will struggle (My E92 M3 would happily bonfire tyres and it was fun) and as you say the added torque from a turbo let alone two makes it worse.

However, it’s well documented that there have been numerous remedial “updates” to this generation mainly to the ecu software for the torque delivery and also the DCT to improve traction so it’s not purely down to being turbocharged.

Ask anyone who owns an MY14 DCT car that’s had the latest firmware ‘integration level’ installed what the difference is in terms of drivability. There are guys making money from doing it as a 3rd party installation as some dealers don’t have a clue.

This should have been right from the start!

I’m hoping to be purchasing an early F80 M3 in March so have been researching. ;-)
