The M range's best days are obviously behind it. BMW are falling further and further behind Merc, Audi, Alfa and Porsche.
I didn't realise Porsche had a small sports saloon.
X6M.
Cayenne GTS.
Try and keep on topic fella.

I've an F80 CP. Seriously, it doesn't need to be any faster in a straight line.

It would be nicer if the low revs engine note didn't sound like Gandalf clearing his throat and the throttle response in 'efficient' were less crap diesel like. Other than that, it's what you should expect from a hardcore sports saloon.

I must admit I liked the F80 Competition pack for the better sound and loved the wheels and new seats!! didn't end up buying one as found it impossible to pull away without lighting the back end up! savage mid-range mind

I recently sold my F80 M3 Competition Pack after 10 months for a whole host of drivability issues including:

- rubbish traction even on a hot summer day
- overly firm suspension even in comfort for a lot of the regular daily driving I do
- lack of steering feel
- DCT gearbox not smooth around town
- overly aggressive throttle map in sport setting making it difficult to pull off without looking like you can't drive
- engine noise did nothing for me

I could list more..... BMW lost their way with this car and made it too track focussed for realistic driving conditions. Despite this the Civic Type R is faster around the Nurburgring than the F80, imagine that?!?!

BMW need to make a lighter more compliant tactile car that appeals to the heart not to pub bragging rights to get me back into a M
Out of interest what did you replace the M3 with?

This only has 355bhp. Still seems quite handy.
See how it struggles at low rpm, torque less garbage.

Maybe things have reached a little bit of a dead end in development now. What I mean by this is that it's difficult to reduce weight significantly if keeping the standard 3 series as the donor and equally, eyebrows would be raised if the power fell or the engine became a pumped up 4 pot.

Perhaps the solution is to change direction and utilise (and build on) the technology from the i8 to create the first hybrid high performance small saloon car? Personally I didn't warn to the looks of the i8 and went for a 911 instead, but if they produced the above I'd really think about it.

Hopefully it would go better than Yipper's attempt at imagining the Porsche sports saloon!

I think even Vauxhall could manage that.

It'll be interesting to see what it looks like and how it drives. I remain a fan of the current F80 M3/M4 and would be the perfect do-it-all car for me.

I just hope they make a proper 1-series M next gen. If Audi and Mercedes can make two decent halo pocket rockets then so can BMW.

Isn't that kind of the M2/M2 CSL though ( the 2-series being a booted 1-series ) - that took over from the 1M coupe.

Or would you want a hatchback 1M as well as an M2 coupe?

Same here.

I'm struggling to think what I would replace my M4 with.

'as found it impossible to pull away without lighting the back end up' Really!

Is your 991 AWD by any chance, if not how do you manage flooring it from the traffic lights?

Because the engine's out over the rear wheels. Massive traction advantage over an M3/4.

I just took my M3 out for a quick drive. From standstill it broke traction when I really stamped on the pedal. If that is how people drive these cars, I'm not surprised there are traction issues. Sorry some people on here have brought the wrong car. If I want to drive like that I'll go on a track, which I have and will do again.

Totally different experience.

It's quite ridiculous to say it but 475HP puts it behind the Giulia and C63S of today's crop - in 3 years time that's going to be well out of date. I'd expect a tickled Giulia by then and also a tweak on the C Class which will go to 550PS + comfortably.

Admittedly I've not driven the current M3 but reviews say it struggles with traction. If I were BMW I'd take the weight penalty of the M5's 4WD system and go to 520PS which should have it keeping up with the other 2 without treading on the M5s toes.
Because a car that can already hit 60 in 4 seconds and 100 in 8.6 seconds needs more power? It's more than fast enough.

If it wants to win favour with the people that buy it then it does yeah.

Cars like this are all willy waving. Barely any people actually buy them that give a st how it drivers, most want it for the badge and how fast it is to impress their mates/missus/random birds they meet
Not really I'm on my 4th so I'm one of those people you so charmingly describe and I get them for me and I love them, no one I know/care about is impressed in the slightest and they don't need to be.

Well I hate to break it to you but you don't represent the bulk of the buyers so your anecdotal evidence means absolutely naff all to BMW and their sales/marketing departments.
