Hyundai i30N - 3 and a half

The i30N's reviews have been odd. Some publications (such as Evo) have basically said it's the best modern hot hatch chassis full-stop, surpassing even Renault Sport's best efforts; some have said it's an unresolved mess. The Stinger's reviews have at least been consistent, saying it's good but not class-leading.
I think the problem with both cars is that whilst in terms of purchase price they look very good value (to be at least), their PCP/lease rates are likely to be horrific compared to the German competition.
Indeed the PCP monthlies are horrific I have just been quoted £445 a month over 48 months with a £1,500 deposit. I think the problem with both cars is that whilst in terms of purchase price they look very good value (to be at least), their PCP/lease rates are likely to be horrific compared to the German competition.

Delivery is pretty quick to, fingers crossed before the end of Jan!
Test drove one with the performance pack this morning, very impressed with the car, looks good, comfortable, handles well, good level of kit as standard, goes well and seems well put together.
The initial finance offer I've had though of £3k down, £375 a month over 48 months for 8k with a £10k balloon seems a bit steep

I've been quoted:
This is for 1500 deposit
48 x £397
1x GFV £10512
APR 4.9%
I think the best I've seen is £370 with a 2k deposit on the owners forum.
For £1500 down and £350 I'd be very tempted but not sure if the dealers will come down to that.
What do people think residuals will be like?

I am being positive about the residuals as can only assume that the N 'brand' will develop and thus help with the values long term. Will be interesting in 3 years time to see what they have brought out!
I just dropped in on this thread as I found the Hyundai i30 road test verdict very odd.
Unlike the OP, who seems to be another german car driver who has issues with Korean cars, I am fairly neutral in my opinion of Hyundais and Kias. What is more odd than the Hyundais somewhat luke warm rating is that the Seat Leon Cupra 300 was given a four star rating in the road test rivals section, ahead of the Golf GTI. This is the same Leon which came bottom of the Autocar hot hatch test in the summer, criticised for being ragged under power and generally inferior to the Golf GTI, which is now ranked below the Leon! Perhaps because sister mag What Car voted the Leon their best family hatch, a revision was considered politic.
...the Autocar road test of the i30N is certainly thorough, but a 3.5 star rating seems a little stingey when you consider that previously, the Focus ST was given four stars (a car which most mags criticise as being ragged when driven hard) and the i30N was given such gushing praise by Autocar in early drives.....
...'tis a bit of a strange one this. As for the list price, the Hyundai's on the road as tested price was £27,995, same as the list price. Everything apart from metallic paint is standard on the i30N. Compare that with the "On the road" price of a similarly equipped Golf or Leon......I bet the Golf is closer to £35K.

Update** Read this months EVO yesterday. Yep, 4.5 stars and edges out the Golf GTI and Peugeot 308 GTI. They love it. Call it a new hero in fact.
So I remain suspicious of the Autocar verdict. Every Haymarket car publication seems to always give top marks to the VAG cars so I wonder if some politics got in the way of the final verdict........
of course, badge snobs like the OP will still have a downer on Korean cars, but perhaps the i30N is like the Subaru Impreza turbo when it emerged in 1994....a hero car for those in the know.....I wouldn't mind that.....
Ahhh I remember when I was young and believed magazines reviews. You’ve got to remember there just a bunch of wkers filling up pages with guff. They wouldn’t know high speed compression from low speed rebound if they fell over it. Let me guess, it has the ‘best chassis since sliced bread’ etc etc
In other news, over 400 quid a month for a Hyundai? You’re joking...

A month later and this offer, received today, seems much better.£417.37 per month. Inc VAT
36 month contract
6 months initial payment
10000 miles per year
HA my mums picking one up today.
She's been looking at a new car for a while and a few mates suggested looking at the i30N. after looking at a BMW 2 series, Golf GTI but decided to go for the N performance.
Price was the big catch for mum and she got a good deal with a local dealer for part ex her old car.
I've taken it for a test drive myself and impressed. Ok not a finished inside as the GTI which had the auto box but a nice drive.
I told her it's going to be a bit quicker than her 8 year old Focus CC3 she has had

Picked mine up last Wednesday now 1200 miles in and very impressed with it. Goes really well, very quick (to me) through the gears and pulls well in 6th from down at 40 mph which is useful, averaging 29 mpg which given on some drives when I have been giving it some err stick it shows 8mpg briefly!
Handles really well, N mode too stiff, so set it up in 'custom' with drive-train in maximum and chassis in sport so all the good noises, aggressive re matching and engine response but a little more compliance over the bumps! Normal mode more than complaint enough for every day. Cabin is smart, seats very supportive and good during the day i spent 8 hours in it, info system is good not amazing but does everything I need + has a lap timer, power and torque gauge and G meter for my inner child!
Re the monthly payments I do 20kpa minimum, so cant expect anything too cheap and frankly spending an extra £40 a month (£430 or so over 3 yrs) to drive a car l like over the residual friendly usual suspects, which have their merits but I personally didn't get on with, is fine by me.
Will sort a readers car thread soon in the meantime unwashed car pictures below!

I've heard good reports I have a client getting one in March, of course you don't hang off one road test as D200 will no doubt be kicking himself for but a number of journalists are saying that the i30N is a good drivers car (not the best interior) & a nice overall package. In other news, over 400 quid a month for a Hyundai? I'm looking forward to seeing this & the Megane duking it out as one of these will become a trackday car (the I30's warranty makes it a very tempting) for my friends & I.
