I think there is a 99.9% chance the new Defender won't look anything like the old one.
Especially if Mrs. Beckham designs it.

If LR recreated the Defender in a similar fashion, that would would be good. With a basic version with a 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol / diesel and a 3.0-litre Ingenium petrol / diesel model for 'lifestyle' consumers with a V8 (5.0-litre or an Ingenium V8 if JLR ever make one) for the UAE / US etc.

If Land Rover are gonna just make it another luxury SUV, I'd hope they at least build it to rival the G-Class.

The G Wagen is so ugly it loops around the unattractiveness curve and comes back super cool.

However, that interior: it's on the long, straight road to total hideousness, passed revolting, straight through repulsive and is keeping on going.

Oh dear.

Maybe Mercedes will one day once again be able to bring exterior and interior styling back to a harmonious whole.

Pointless!! I do like the rugged look and all but it’s a pointless car because of its price.

It’s 100k for what? It’s not luxurious or comfortable to be in and its excellent off road qualities are hardly ever used. So it’s a car for posers really. If you want pure off road ability you are going to something like a land cruiser or defender type, if you are going luxurious feel than RR or even the GLS will be a better proposition with all the off-road ability you will ever need. For the price it is pointless IMHO.

+1

Glad it exists though but would never be on my shopping list.

Got a G63 AMG and have to say I love it despite its many flaws. I also have to say I won't be rushing to buy the new one based on the pictures of the interior.

They've done it so it looks fresh and modern, but still looks old like a G Wagen.
rofl

there is zero "fresh and modern" on the outside here.
That's not necessarily a bade thing given this product does not align it self with any rules that require aesthetic 'beauty'
Function, function, function.
To which end, this does indeed nail it, like the Defender and Willys/Wrangler did before...

Modern inside though....I mean the 'utility' and 'function' mantra has just fked off out the brief ...to be replaced with bling and pazzazz...but....hmm...well....

It's a rarefied market here, purely functional utility vehicle breaks through the ceiling into Saudi's go-to luxury transport and suddenly the whole world thinks their cool enough to trundle round cities in...... Mercedes take note, tailor it to suit... cash in remorselessly with wonderfully unnecessary powerplants and that's that.
G-class consigned to the cool wall for ever and ever...

utterly bizarre.

Do I understand correctly that Mercedes has stopped using a beam axle in favour of fully independent suspension? If so, I think this represents the most significant aspect of this update.

To be fair, they are pretty pricey things: https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

Yes, GW prices are insane. If they had a Kia badge on the front, people would point and laugh and they'd sell second-hand for about £15k. It's urban snobbery at its best.
