Well, it looks like a Toyota Comfort that's been on the pies, it will drink like a fish whilst returning meagre performance in return, I would imagine it isn't the most fun on anything other than a smooth motorway, and parts availablity is likely to be migraine-inducing.
.
If you mean the Toyota Crown Comfort taxi, the Century was out decades before it existed..
The second-generation Century (model code G50), of which the car in the article is an example, came out in ´97.
The Comfort / Crown Comfort predates it by two years:

Japanese Rolls not that it is the same as an *actual* Rolls.
The LS is a lower car in the Toyota/Lexus range. Your argument is the equivalent of saying "Why bother with an S-Class Merc, you should buy an E-Class". Yes an E-Class is nice...but it's not an S-Class.
How can you compare the two if they're from different brands? It's like saying a Phaeton is better than an A8, they're not even in the same hierachy? The LS is a lower car in the Toyota/Lexus range. It was only relatively recently that Lexus branched out from being the "exporter" arm of Toyota to selling as Lexus in the JDM as well.

Now I'm looking at Rollers and thinking they're good value....
Would running costs really be that bad??

This Yank RR repairer has some interesting service and repair articles to really frighten you off owning a Roller or Bentley...
Toyota go to ridiculous lengths regarding quality on their big cars. Lexus engineer checking switches reputedly has 3 sets of fingernails.....the paint guys are retrained every 3 months... etc..
This should last forever?
That Series one has a touch of old Studebaker about it's front end-sold!

I didn't know they existed until today - thanks to PH it's another school day for me.
I love that fold-out front seat feature, but how many Japanese people would ever need that? I thought they were mostly not that tall!
I got picked up from Heathrow once in a LWB 7 Series with the front passenger seat fully forward and my feet couldn't reach the seat back (mind you I'm only 5'9").
For some reason I like it just for being different - a bit like a Zil!

There's something deeply lovely about this - unpretentious old-money luxury. If they make an actual 400bhp rather than the gentleman's-handshake 276bhp, then that also makes them more compelling. However, I'd struggle to justify one over an X305 XJ12 or E38 750i, never mind a W140 S600...
Anyone else think that, post-Honda, Rover missed a trick in not signing a deal with Toyota to import these, stick a Rover grille on the nose, some Axminster, Connolly and walnut on the dash and sell it as a cut-price Rolls?

Anyone likening the quality of these to a mere Lexus should consider that most of Shoichiro Toyoda's friends and peers (not to mention the Imperial Household) would have owned one, and that the car was produced entirely for the status accrued to Toyota by this - making money off it won't have been a factor.
Then think about how truly, madly, deeply unhappy Toyoda-san would be to have one of these gents complain to him about a broken car.
Then consider the position of the Toyota employee who allowed that unfortunate situation to occur.

I love these always have.. if you get a chance look at some of the v12 century driveby videos on youtube.. epic sounds! almost like an aero engine.
My heart sank soon as i saw it on the front page spidey senses told me it would be some chancer asking 10k plus! I was looking at them 2-3 years back at 4k! Seems like anything old is megabucks now the classic car bubble is just pulling everything up in price!
4k interesting and worth a punt.. 12k your having a laugh!

Was that an option for Rover? It seems very unlikelyI wonder how much hp it does actually produce? This is the most silent rubber burning like ever:

That makes absolutely no difference, it still looks rubbish (and has Hilux switch gear). The only thing I like about that is the very nice looking gearstick...
I think you you'll find that it's actually Lexus switchgear. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
