When your average person is asked to describe a car enthusiast, a few images probably come to mind which probably puts people off giving a damn about them for fear they’ll turn into one. Im fully aware that I’m about to offend multiple users, so be it, but a couple might be...

1. A group of poorly dressed knuckle-draggers in lowered cars, hanging around in a McDonald's car park with seemingly no other life.

2. A group of 40yr old looking virgin types hanging around in a pub car park, who look about as exciting as a Ryvita (basically PH)

3. Mid-life crisis types in nice cars, who now look ridiculous

These days though car groups aren’t really a thing, it’s all about owning a badge, bruv.

I love cars but don't talk about them with friends or anyone else unless at a car show or event. Forums are really the only place I talk cars.

Some people only care about the badge and the letter on the number plate, and the majority don't care at all!

Like others on here, I know I'm a car bore and, if I forget, my wife reminds me regularly too.

I just know to stay out of those sorts of conversations. I remember helping out at the school fete a couple of years ago and two of the other Dads were talking about the amazing deal one had got on tyres for his A5 convertible from ASDA. Asking him what brand/model he'd opted for was going to be fruitless. I just stayed out of it.

This is why I love here and Twitter though. I can be a car bore to my heart's content!

Now I know a fair bit about cars, models, engines, how to drive them and so on - but I am now worried if I have missed this little nugget of info. Is there a way of telling what side the petrol cap is on from inside the car?

See the little arrow next to the pump? Tells you filler is on the left.
This has been discussed on here before.

It doesn't apply to all vehicles.
Does on mine

I'm a car enthusiast....in that i am interested in all kinds of cars, old and new.

I could talk all day about cars...trouble is...like others have said...i couldn't with most of my friends as they are just not 'into it'.

I do however luckily have a couple of friends i can go into full 'geek mode' with.

And on here, of course.

Couldn't agree more.
I have a few close friends who love cars and motorsport, but I couldn't imagine how dull my life would be if we spent our time together trading stats and testing each other's 'knowledge'.
Yeah, because blokes discussing football, Golf, the war(s) and the best way to plumb in a 1.5" dual flush valve are just soooooo much more interesting than car enthusiasts, aren't they? rolleyes

The way I see it, willful ignorance about cars goes hand in hand with maintenance neglect & and zero interest in road craft. 1.3+ tons of metal on the roads and their owners haven't got a f'ckin clue.

Imagine owning and shooting a gun as a hobby, and you know precisely zero about guns. Erm, can I put this Lapua magnum round in my .22 range pistol?

Not understanding something in intimate detail, fair enough, our brains aren't big enough to know everything about everything - but it's a car, ffs. The second biggest purchase after your house, and a purchase you can quite easily die in. And people don't want to know the slightest thing about it, other than what badge is on the front? Jesus, I hope to never meet these kind of people.

If you know which side your exhaust is on, the filler cap will be on the opposite side. LHD and RHD versions of the same model rarely change the position of the filler cap.
Do you think someone who doesn't which side the filler cap is on will have any idea which side their car's exhaust pipe is on?

My mates guitar cost more than his car.

He knows how the guitar works inside and out. He knows fk all about cars.

I mean, don't you know the slightest thing about guitars, other than the name stamped on it? People have been killed playing electric guitars before, and you don't know anything about them? I hope I don't meet people like you!

Do you see?
I know guys who have zero interest in cars, but are very good and very safe at driving. You dont have to be a car bore to be safe on the road.

Haha OT, but this reminds me of the description of a musician.
Someone who loads £5000 guitar and amp into a £500 car for a £50 gig.

Well m8, a 116D sounds like it's a BM. If it is it's like way better than a Ford even if you've got an ST.

It is a premium brand for an obvious reason, it's premium. BMs are designed to be Ultimate Driving Machines and anybody who knows anything knows that. I don't get looks of envy when I'm in my BM because people don't know, it's because they do know - that they're looking at someone who's been successful, has good taste and has reached the ultimate in drivers' cars.

They're rear wheel drive to help put the power down and help them handle better but you need to be able to drive the rwd and not a lot of people can do that. That's partly why, as a BM driver, you get so much respect from other drivers.

Even you acknowledge it as a premium brand, so admitting it's better than a Ford, Vauxhall, VW etc. She's obviously got good taste, can probably drive quickly and well and has obviously been successful.

Not only are BMs a clear statement of the driver's success, girls are much more likely to go with a chap in a BM than, say, a Ford because it's a nature thing, they see the BM driver as the Alpha male of the pack. Seriously, with your ST, is it the diesel STD?, if you met a girl and said 'I've got a BM, fancy a ride?' or you said 'I've got an STD, fancy a ride?', who are they going to go for.

BM wins every time.
Ahhh we’ve missed you fella hehe

But see my bold, isn’t your ‘2AT’ FWD wink you’re slipping....
How Very Dare You.

No doubt you mean well, but if it's your word against that of the sales executive who crunched the numbers with me before I pulled the trigger, I know who I'd trust. He said BMs have made their reputation on RWD cars and that's good enough for me.

I did put some snow socks on the 2AT the other day, on the back, but it didn't seem to make much difference but that's probably more to do with the power delivery of a BM developed high-performance engine easily overwhelming the grip available. I still noticed lots of people looking at me though, obviously envious of a winter-prepared high performance brand car out in weather that would trouble a Range Rover.

Traditionally the manufacturer always positioned the filler cap on the passenger side of the car for its main market. i.e. British and Jap cars had the filler cap on the left because they drive on the left, European cars on the right...

This meant when you ran out of fuel you didn't have to stand in the middle of the road when you fill up.

Sorry - this is proper car bore stuff sleep and why its good to have friends with no car knowledge...

I don’t get all this “car bods are boring” thing.
I’ve been totally enthralled by one and a half pages of posts telling me how I can find my fuel flap.
