I was thinking about my latest aquisition, a Skoda Superb 3.6 4x4 DSG estate, and consequently the subject of rare versions of otherwise common cars.

Looking at howmanyleft seems to indicate a total of around 160 V6 4x4 Skodas, at any given time there's usually about 2 for sale nationally. Other candidates include the Volvo S80 4.4 V8 (~100) and the Passat R36 (~140).

The common theme seems to be cars with big petrol engines but no aspirational badge on the front (unfortunately the exact type of car I like). What others can people come up with?

I was looking for a e92 BMW 335I estate petrol a while ago, and assumed it was a common car.

There was only one for sale and that sold the next day, not seen another come up since!

Edit, just checked, only one for sale in the whole of the UK at the moment:

The 340I's were another jump up in year and price, I was looking about 20-22K for a 335, 340's were about 30K

Not sure how many Passat W8’s were sold but I’ve only ever seen 2 on the road.

You keep finding the OP's new car? That's a bit strange.

Continuing with the VAG theme, the V10 Tourag and W8 Passat aren't common. Whilst not a 'common' car in itself, the Phaeton is even less common in W12 flavour.

People are pussies when it comes to big engines.

I'm in the market for a new daily to last me 12-18 months that will depreciate minimally and I'm thinking something like the superb or Passat myself. I love the rarity aspect.

The rush for diesel over the last 15 years had led to many rare big petrol engined variants of cars. Looking at petrol estates I quite liked the look of the facelift W204 Mercedes C350 estate - could I find one? No. I don't think they sold more than a handful. As stated above the 328i and 335i 3 Series estates are also pretty rare. Volvo V60- again any of the higher powered petrols (T5, T6, Polestar)

How rare versions of rare cars?

Lancia Thema 8.32

Gratuitous engine pic

Surprisingly, there are more now (24 Sorn and 4 taxed) than there were at the 'height' of its sales (24)

I went looking for a Superb 3.6 V6 a few years ago. Dealer eventually got back to me and said there wasn't one in the UK, having spoken to Skoda.

Not too many Mondeo ST220s about, nor Mazda 6 MPS.

Being as this is Pistonheads, where pedantry matters... you won’t find an e92 335i estate anywhere, ever.
E92 is the coupe, E90 is the saloon and E91 is the estate.

Not too many R36s either.
