The 3 litre 200bhp V6 Mk3 Mondeo ( not the ST220 )

They didn't sell many ( far outnumbered by the ST220 )
That's because they were 2.5 litre and I think they sold about the same as the ST220 as you could have it in 3 different models, Zetec S, Ghia and Ghia X.

3 Litre V6 was ST220 only.

Factually incorrect - they did a 3 litre NON ST220 Mondeo - but, as you say, they also did a 2.5 litre V6 in different trims.

The 3 litre V6 versions that weren't ST220s were about 200bhp ( rather than the 217bhp of the ST220 )

If you look at my original post further up I've posted an example for you

Anyway, here's another in Ghia X trim to show you it wasn't a one-off

Well bugger me.

I used to sell the fking things as well. That must have been a run out model as I left Ford before they facelifted the Mondeo but after the ST220.

Interesting.
They are a bit rare in terms of numbers of Mondeos made certainly.

Percentage terms probably around the same as the Sierra Sapphire 4x4 Ghia was for Sierra

W218 Mercedes CLS500 4.7. According to how many left, only 24 sold in the UK. I have one of them.

https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&...

Am I reading that right?? I'm assuming the CLS 500 AUTO is the 5.5 W219.....

Turbocharged 4.6 M278 replaced N/A 5.5 M273 around 2010/2011, W218 never came with 5.5 although it was still called 500.

It was a 78bhp 1.8.

Think you're remembering it through rose tinted specs.
I'm pretty sure the 205 STDT had the 1.9TD lump in it.
The STDT had the 1.8 litre diesel for sure. If you had the 309GRDT you got a cooler with it that upped it to around 90 brake plus quite a bit of nice trim bits

Everyone - this thread is titled ‘Rare Versions of Common Cars’

It means cars that were never produced in big numbers when new.

NOT

My car is 10-20 years old, was pretty common when new but as they’ve been around for a while there’s only a few of mine left so it’s rare NOW

Some of the suggestions on here really weren’t that rare when their main models were common - i.e Merc CLS500, Audi 1.8T Quattro, BMW 130i, Peugeot 205TD - all mass produced and fairly common.

I was looking for a e92 BMW 335I estate petrol a while ago, and assumed it was a common car.

There was only one for sale and that sold the next day, not seen another come up since!

Edit, just checked, only one for sale in the whole of the UK at the moment:

I have one of these (f31 335i touring), but in the even rarer manual form. Not sure how many were sold like that, and they have stopped doing the the manual in the f31 340i.

I've just bought a 'vectra special vxr v6'.

It looks like a plain white vectra estate, but has the running gear, brakes and suspension from the vxr model.

Not sure on the exact figures but it seems a rare version of a common car to me.

Ex police traffic car.
I had one in the hatch body shape. I really liked that car

Weirdly enough, I worked with a guy who had one whilst also studying at college with another guy who owned one! They weren't that fast. Very linear power delivery which probably didn't help.
There was always a handful for sale online a few years ago. I used to peruse the Corolla T Sport classifieds regularly when I was car shopping. I seemed to recall somewhere around Yorkshire had two or three for sale for £4995 each.

It does look a bit like it's waiting for a recovery in that picture though...

More of a rare option than model variant but I wonder how many A8's Audi sold with the B & O Hi-Fi option.

I only seen one for sale.

The man has a point.

What about…
Lotus Carlton
Lotus Sunbeam
Lotus Cortina

All versions of a mass market product.

Well, there were I believe fewer than a thousand 130i sold in the UK and I’ve only ever seen one other on the road so pretty rare by any sensible definition.

The 1.8T A4 Quattro was also hens teeth with people specing FWD with that engine...

Hartge, usually better known for mad BMW conversions, were involved in its development too, although not sure to what degree

In a slightly similar vein (as in French, forced induction, LHD and rare):
