RE: Porsche 911 (964): PH Carpool

loved my 964 till the headstud's started snapping, engine had 120k miles. When the engine revved you could see the cylinder base gapping from the crankcase.
was quoted £10k repair as a starter, £5k in rebuild parts, then if the pistons, rings and cylinders needed replacing minimum of £3k extra, oh and throw a clutch in (might as well).. that's to return to a fresh but standard engine. Its not unknown to go 3.8 with a different ECU.

These were always the dream for me, i remember an awesome one popping up for sale around 6-7 years ago for 13k and i had 2 cars that would total that value but running the thing at 90 miles a day wouldnt have been possible! (I was 22 at the time also) Now just look at the prices of them!
A good friend has a significantly modified one he races in hillclimb and i've been lucky enough to spend time in it on trackdays, so all is not lost!

What a great article, it almost identical to my own experience.
I bought a 964 C4 8 years ago, which had been a childhood dream.
I still use it regularly for commuting, I have a roof rack for my bikes/paddleboards and even do at least one trackday a year!
My plan is to one year drive it out to the Alps in the winter on a ski trip, to see how well the AWD system works on the hairpins
It's a definite keeper and even after 8 years look forward to every time I get in it for a journey, (a driving experience that is really involving and reminds you that the car is a mechanical thing!)

Are you talking about an orange one owned by Martin?
Afraid not, a white one owned by a Simon!Great article - thankyou for sharing. I have a 964 C2 which I have owned since 2001 and in which I have done 64,000 miles, now showing 138,000. I love driving it today just as much as I did when I bought it. No intention of selling ever!
I chose the 964 because it is old enough to look like a 911 and modern enough to use as a DD (which I did for the first few years). Size is a great advantage, too.
