The government have won. Selling my diesel for a petrol.....

I keep toying with the idea of swapping my 3.0D jag with the petrol equivalent.
I’m only getting ~38mpg on my very stress-free dual-carriageway commute - I reckon I could get within 10-15% of that with the supercharged v6 lump. Possibly even better after a remap.
My old, old 3.0 V6 petrol X-Type managed upwards of 36 mpg on a mixed (but mainly motorway) run up to North Wales. It plummeted once I got there of course, but isn't that the point of North Wales..?I’m only getting ~38mpg on my very stress-free dual-carriageway commute - I reckon I could get within 10-15% of that with the supercharged v6 lump. Anyway, with a super-tall 8-speed box, two wheel drive, and general improvements in engine design, I reckon you could beat my record.
Depends how you define "soot chucker". As "technically" speaking the only reason that many petrols have increased MPG is down to Direct Injection. The S55 features only direct injection, and produces particulates.
BMW are even replacing the CFRP driveshaft for a steel one in preparation for fitting a GPF.
Direct injection petrols are not as clean as many people actually "think". Avoiding direct injection petrols is actually harder than many think. In certain cases many studies have found a diesel with DPF to emit less particulates than a direct injection petrol.

It's great to see diesels are becoming a pariah once more and that their numbers are decreasing. Of course, it might seem smug and giddy for some to simply be swopping into an inefficient petrol for the moment, but remember, those petrols will eventually decline in numbers too through sheer evolution, so enjoy while you can.
The Government is indeed on the right track. "Force" owners out of Diesels. Promote Hybrids and EV. Manufacturers produce less Petrols as the uptake on Hybrids and EV increases. Older petrol cars eventually die out too.
20-30 years from now, very few Petrol-only cars on the roads, even fewer Diesels. Health benefits and cleaner air in congested areas realised.
No one said it would be an overnight process once it really kicked off.
All good and on message so far!

Just the congestion will be twice as bad by then, I honestly think theres no more room in hell to support the population in already densely populated areas.Ill enjoy my V8 while I can until im forced out of it. Cant wait to drive to work in an EV... god what a mundane thought. st day at work then you have to get in a car that's soul-less. Probably drive itself as well

I don't like diesels, they are the wrong engine for a passenger car but unless there are diesel restrictions where you live, drive what you like (or pay the LEZ charge and drive what you like). If you bought a diesel for the tax breaks, you've already given into the "man", so giving in again and buying a petrol isn't an issue.

hire cars only reinforcing just how annoying to drive, they are.
Good news there - with out having to force them to do it the hire companies in Belfast and Edinburgh airports both gave me petrols at the end of last year.Used to hate being forced to drive a diesel hire car, especially when somewhere like the Med. Beautiful weather, beautiful views, God-awful soundtrack.

It is with a heavy heart after 25k miles in my BMW 430D over the last year, I have admitted the government were right and we should never have bought them damn soot churning bd cars.
So last week and being a good proletariat; I bought a BMW M4 Competition pack. MPG is at 23 for the last 500 miles and Sainsbury's Super unleaded sales are at a record level but at least I am conforming.
Has anyone else converted?

It feels good to be helping the environment.
