an impreza.... i think they've become fairly cool and lost the 90s chav image enough with time. Plus I will be changing my commute to take in some amazing twisty country roads... now seems the time. Is it unrealistic however to assume that if I keep it on my drive it will just get nicked? Or do thieves not give a st about them any more?

I suppose it depends how 'showy' the car is, something low key like this would be my choice -

Nobody cares about scoobs anymore really, they're dirt cheap now aside from the rare JDM editions, and not really a targeted car.

The mitsi Evo well and truly won that battle and endured.

Theres some much better / more discreet vehicles to rob than imprezas these days.

A Golf R is the prime example

My other half nipped out to get something out the glovebox of mine...and proceeded to leave it completely unlocked. As it only gets used on occasion, it was two weeks before I noticed.

I'm still paranoid of leaving it anywhere, but that's largely because you only have to look at the doors and front wings and they'll dent. As has been said, it would appear rum 'uns don't care about a mid-90s saloon - particularly when most modern hot hatches are just as quick/ capable down a B road...

On a serious note, if it's quick for getaways and outrunning the police, has all-wheel-drive plus four doors so miscreants can pile in quickly, then it's sadly going to be a target a la Golf R / S3 etc.

i'd contemplate a legacy or an outback TBH for the (kind of) sleeper thing but maybe it is the full showy spoilers and batst looks that I want!

I look at the Evo and yea it does look like it won the power and the residuals battle... not much under £10k!

I used to be that guy with a silly/loud exhaust and boot spoilers, they make me cringe now.

There are some lovely Forester STi's on Ebay at the moment, one black and one world rally blue, I think the company was SVAImports or similar.

Forester STI would be my choice if you want STI power in a slightly more subtle package, they are around £8-10k though.

My colleague just bought a regular 2l turbo forester (XT i think), and they can be tuned up to not far off STI power with relatively little spending. It's very unassuming to look at but pretty quick. Not bad for a £1500 car.

You can only really get a sense of the playing field by comparing Japanese Imprezas against the contemporary Lancer Evolution. The UK market Imprezas aren't really comparable to the JDM special editions which are the true competition. Also recall that Imprezas were rather more common in the UK too as you could just walk into a dealership and buy one.

I hope this doesn't violate any selling rules on PH, but if it's a sleeper you're after my Spec-D is going in the classifieds as soon as I have a free Sunday to polish and photograph it.

How much will you be asking for it? That's very nice

I agree OP - hot Subarus are now cool IMO. I ended up in a Forester STi but did look at a few Imprezas.

I don't want to dodge the question, but I think I should answer that by putting up a classified ad shortly (with some temporary photos) so I don't break the advertising rules here.

As much as I admire Forrester STIs, it's a difficult purchase to justify. £10,000 for a decent one with reasonable mileage, along with all the extra question marks that come with an imported car.

Or get an MX5 or MR2 or whatever, or a GT86. Cheaper in every department. Probably more fun. No mpg guilt and or lamenting all the performance you paid for but can't exploit because of the rest of the traffic. You might commute on B-roads, but I assume we aren't talking about a muddy, gravelly rally stage...

If you're rich enough though, fair enough.

I used to have a 2004 JDM Impreza that had been tweaked by Litchfield Imports - A Type 20. Recently the current owner let me have a go of it having sold it over 3 years ago. I actually think I enjoyed it more now than when I owned it. They are the perfect antidote to the refined, electric steered, automatic gearboxed stuff that is so prevalent now. I loved it. And I'd have it back before I'd have a Golf R, S3, A45 or any of the other crop of modern stuff. And I don't care in the slightest if the new stuff is quicker, although, in the hands of someone who really knew what they were doing, I rather doubt it actually would be.... Unfortunately it was bl**dy expensive to run or I'd be seriously tempted to try and buy it back again.
