I forgot to add the CLK in the article is a rare Avantgarde Sport hence the Orthopedic Seats lower suspension & 18 wheels.

Actually best find a later 06/56 plate one and enjoy the 380hp 5.5ltr version that looks identical but is a true rocket ship. That’s the real deal.
This!
They are properly rare cars tough... Not a single one on PH or AT atm. So classy to have them in Elegance or Avantgarde spec and not with the AMG kit!

I was looking at convertible clk500's the other day, and could be quite tempted. Just worried about roof reliability.
I’ve got one of the last w209s (2010) albeit a clk350. 49k miles and the roof died about a month ago. Refurbed (year warranty) pump was £400 and the relay it killed another £30. Pretty easy fit.

I love the car, great daily and can’t see myself getting shot of it soon.
That's good to know, doesn't sound as ruinous as it could be. Only problem is the premium the CLK500 has, but it would definitely be nice to have the V8 smile

The Facebook comments for this article are hilarious. People thinking the car is going to explode at any opportunity and cost you billions. Fine I say. CLKs are great looking cars for the money. I’ve had one for the last 80k. Sure mine has had a couple of costly bills but I haven’t found kind any more expensive to run than a poxy focus.

My CLS had that engine and weighed 1850 kilos, these are marginally lighter, the CLS was rapid, same engine in this must be a giggle, stick a CLK 220 badge on and surprise some quite quick cars, would it match a Golf R.

I really don't need one of these, but it looks like a helluva lot of car for the money!

In 10 years time I'll probably be kicking myself for not getting one when they were so cheap. laugh

They are quick. I used enjoy burning off Audi S4’s / BMW M3’s etc in my “old man’s” car. Until we got to corners...

The V8 is incredible in as it’s so small and quite light. It just pulled and pulled. 0-62 wasn’t too shabby; around 5 seconds or so, but the 30 - stupid was just immense. It felt like you had been picked up on the front of a huge wave and just kept accelerating with no letup. I loved mine and put 80,000 miles on it in 3 years with no problems whatsoever.

I've just made the potential error of checking out what these cars cost second hand in Hong Kong.

Cheapest one is 1,500gbp, the most expensive is 3,500. All under 60k miles.

Someone start highlighting arguments against, please...

(the only thing I can come up with is that a parking space is 300 per month)

Had a CLK55 for three years, bullet proof epic cars. Cost me like £8k 5 years ago (no idea what the cost would be now). Bargain.

These cars are amazing value, I purchased the slightly later 5.5 CLK500 black on black coupe with 383bhp 2 years ago for the measly sum of £6600 - yes I get stung for road tax but its an amazing Q car - no one expects what looks like a CLK180 will take off like a scolded cat :-). Post 2005 also have the better 7 speed gearbox. Also the road tax jumps from £285 to £515 for cars registered after Apr 2006 - my wifes 4.2 Supercharged RRS just snuck in the lower band by a few days... result!

Well played.

They are so rare that I thinkI know of most that have been sold over the last few years!

There was one in that colour thatI went to see in Hampshire about 2 years ago but, due to procrastination on my part, it sold. Still annoyed as what a car!

I bought mine thinking I wanted a barge and at least keep the same performance as my 350Z, it would have annihilated the 350Z.

What car did you have it in Schmalex ?

I was looking to by a C215 CL55 Kompressor - but saw this come up & thought I give it a test drive, did not notice much difference in performance, prob because its lighter. Its got factory option AMG wheels, COMAND etc - strangely not parking sensors but someone fitted a good quality set to the rear which looks almost factory.

A 500 is so close to being a 55 and yet so far away you may as well just get the 55.

You have missed the point of the 500.

The 55 (or later 63) is all about being shouty and extrovert. The 500 is all about being terribly discrete (it even has the same single tail pipe as the boggo 200 Kompressor). Take the badge off the back and no-one would have a clue what it is

Not really. The 55 AMGs from this era are not shouty in the slightest. They are very discreet. Agree the the later 63s, etc are the opposite though!
