I recently found a 959 poster that I had on my bedroom wall when I was at school, I'm 46 now!
Same age so we likely had the same poster - car was silver if I remember. Sk00p said:

DELETED: Comment made by a member who's account has been deleted. And an Athena one of the car with the 1DOL number plate.
1 DOL was on the 959 owned by the Patrick Collection based in Kings Norton, Birmingham.
The car was sublime to drive. Very complicated technically & very very quick.
I remember the sense of anticipation in the office the day that the 959 was delivered - bettered only when our 288 GTO arrived with myself behind the wheel.
Having driven the 959 & F40 back to back I would take the F40 every time. Just more fun to drive. And even quicker.
Takes nothing away from the 959. Jaw droppingly gorgeous from every angle. We had it on display in the centre of the museum. On a raised revolving display plinth.
Probably the jewel in our collection.
Does anyone know of a good website to read up on the whole Group B angle on the 959? I've never understood if Porsche developed this car thinking there would be circuit racing under the Group B rules (as it wasn't just a 'rally' category) and they'd use the car primarily in that setting, or if Porsche really intended to use this car to beat Lancia, Peugeot etc in the forests when they started the project?
Almost all the info I have seen about this basically just references that the 959 started off as a 'B' project but the category disappeared before the car was done, so it morphed it into a road super-car because Porsche needed to get money back from the project (like so many of the other Group B cars)...

I've an Autocar in my work desk drawer, with a 959 roadtest, I must dig it out; haven't a clue from what year it is though.
13th July 1988.This was given to me a couple of years ago by a member of staff who is a bit of a hoarder; his wife had instructed him to have a clearout and amongst everything were magazines going back decades, he knew I was a massive 959 fan so he gave me the Autocar:
Porsche took too long in getting the thing manufactured and homologated. Despite the Gruppe B concept car being shown in 1983, the first road cars weren't delivered until April 1987 and the "last" one of 292 cars was made in 1988, which was long after Group B had been canned. The original plan was for a road car, a rally car and a race car. To be fair they did all eventually get produced albeit for rally car, read rally raid car and for race car read Le Mans prototype.
Unusually Porsche built another 8 road cars in 1992 - 1993 after a 4 year hiatus by using up some spare parts.
