Nice article, will now spend ages looking at 'potential' new cars. Got excited about the Boxster featured in this article too, then saw the exhaust vomit

The exhaust on that Boxster is horrific!
That car was (& may still be) for sale in the classifieds. I emailed the seller to ask a few questions as was in the market at the time, questions included curiosity about the exhaust and confirming if the car has Bose as the advert stated Bose but the car had the normal storage box on the rear shelf that non-Bose cars had, plus no Bose badges on the doors.

Seller said exhaust was a custom ported backbox. And that the invoice from when they bought the car said Bose so it has Bose. I pointed out that the car didn't have Bose and they said OK & asked if I wanted to buy it which I declined as I was looking for a car with Bose. When I checked a few days later the advert still stated Bose.

No idea why Pistonheads picked this particular one as their car for the article given the extremely turgid exhaust pipes.

Early Boxsters - ... Even now it has yet to lose it's poor mans 911/lady car image. Behind the wheel you're always going to feel as if you're trying to be something you're not as is the car.
I really struggle to understand this point of view. Surely a 996 or 997 Carrera driver should feel the same, after all they're pretending to inherit the 911's proud motorsports heritage, but they don't actually have a Mezger engine with racing heritage, unlike the 'real deal' GT3 ? Does a Fiesta driver have to apologise for bearing the proud, Le-Mans-winning blue oval badge but not driving the "real thing" GT40 ? Porsche, like most successful businesses, make a range of products, that doesn't mean that everything other than a 911 is a 'fake Porsche'.

Furthermore, unlike say a 944, the 986/987 Boxster actually have a lot in common with the contemporary 911, and the biggest differences are (a) the engine is the right place (ever seen a rear-engined F1 car?) and (b) you don't have to pay extra for a folding roof.

Does it have BOSE?

Yes i've got a piece of paper that says BOSE.

Some people!

Hope you're enjoying the car, it's on my list at some point smile

Speak for yourself.

I expect this from the general public but are car enthusiasts really this vain?

Why is it always the people without a garage listed that make the most knob comments?

Interesting comment - I had a Mk6 GTD from new and did 90K in it without a single issue. Went to Italy in it three years on the trot via Germany. Perhaps they like being run hard - mine did almost no town use. A car I admired but never loved though.
If you look at the Honest John review of the Mk 6, it makes fairly depressing reading. https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volkswagen/g...

It's just cliched unimaginative quoting of Clarkson / trolling from people who I'd imagine haven't experienced one, and probably don't know very much about cars.

The Boxster is very mechanically similar to the 911 and fantastic to drive. Wins every group test and generally always has. What other car in this price band competes as a drivers car, and the Porsche brand is way stronger than BMW, Merc, Audi, Honda, Mazda etc. My first Boxster 2.5 was over £40k new in 1998. That's £70k today adjusted for inflation. Hardly a poor man's anything.

How was it down a favourite road?
If you're asking about the S5, it's a good place to be, if you know what I mean. It'll never be an Evo or an Impreza, and with the V8 up front and the usual Audi handling set up, it's not like you're judging the road by the feel through the steering wheel. On the straights you have fun with the torque and noise from the V8, and the traction out of bends is fantastic of course; it's just going into them that you're aware of the natural understeer and lack of steering feedback.

It's obviously a GT (if that) rather than sports car, but I'm in Canada where the roads are straight and roundabouts are non-existent, and as a car for a late night blast back home through the snow and appalling drivers, it's just fabulous. The biggest challenge is the gearing, which will get you to 60mph in 2nd, and licence-losing territory in 3rd if you really want to enjoy the engine noise.

I don't think they got the B7 RS4 here (or not many, and no Avants), and the B6 S4 is getting on a bit and has expensive problems, so for me the S5 was a great way to get a manual V8 with decent build quality and AWD for winter. Costs a bit more than £10k over here though...

Completely agree, cracking cars!! The ones spouting rubbish about it being a poor mans 911 / ladies car, are idiots who know nothing about cars, and are missing out on a truly great sports car!

For £10k I’d love something like a mid 1990’s Sl320. Pretty sure you can get a great one with lots of change from £10k. Don’t think I’ve heard too many ruinous stories..

You can get a vx220 for that budget.
Huge value for money in that car, I reckon.

And for those who don't mind LHD, there are lots more to consider on the Continent in Opel guise. Whatever one saves over the cost of a more upscale brand, there's money for mod's.

It's still possible to buy a Maserati today for ~£10k.

And Top Gear did a famous episode 8-12 years ago, where they picked up a 1970s Ferrari, Lambo and Maserati for ~£10k. Just need a time-machine.

3200GT - V8 twin turbo, with those boomerang lights! Just £9,995, then the same again in annual maintenance! (To be fair, the auto apparently doesn't suffer the crank issue that kills the manuals).

Blimey, that’s pretty ugly. Mine was a manual GTD so maybe I swerved a bullet through the right spec, or perhaps it was an anti-Friday afternoon car!

I had a DSG 2.0 TDI and it didn’t give me any problems either, but it was used pretty much exclusively for long motorway journeys. Couple of friends with manual 1.6 TDIs used mainly in town have had endless DPF and EGR problems
